It was only a matter of time before we needed to present passports for Canada or Mexico. After 9/11 I wondered when this would start.

We used to go to Windor quite a bit. I got so used to the guy asking "Where were you born" that I got so I didn't even listen to the question. One day the guy switched questions and asked "What is your citizenship?" I answered "Detroit" My wife thought it was so funny that she just had to tell her entire family. For years after that they would refer to me as their "Son-in-Law who is a Citizen of the Country of Detroit"

I am told it is the practice in Europe to present a passport when going from one country to another.

You do not need to be a citizen to have a license.

This Passport thing will hurt some of the Senior Clubs who go to Windsor for the Casino. They will not like the inconvenience of passports. They will have to stick with MGM or Greektown. I known they will NOT go to Motor City.

This really is nothing too new. Canada border gaurds have almost always asked me for my passport or original birth certificate. I've never carried them on me going over there.

Every time, I get a lecture about how it's a requirement and that I should have it . The worst thing they do is send me to customs to have my vehicle inspected. I had one guy threaten to turn me around and send me home...but he didn't.

For awhile, military ID worked. If they started to hassle me about not having proof of citizenship, I'd just whip that out and they'd let me pass.

But several years ago (even before 9/11), a border gaurd told me that military ID is insufficient. I asked him why not...I told him that whenever a serviceman is sent to a foreign land, all he needs to travel is his military ID. He said that they don't accept it because you don't have to be born in America to serve in the Armed Forces.

This is true.

I don't think the passport/birth certificate thing is being used to identify your citizenship. I think it's being used to identify what country you were born.

If you take an original birth certificate that says you were born in Texas (like me...yee haw!)...it does not reflect whether or not you have changed your citizenship since then.

To serve in the Armed Forces, you must be a US citizen...but you don't have to have been born in the US.

I've been to Canada since 9/11...and it's still the same old song and dance with those border guards. They still hassle me about not having my birth certificate or passport...and they still let me cross. Some are harder than others. But rarely am I sent to customs for inspection anymore.

Okay...and I just realized that that article is talking about people RETURNING from Canada (eh!).

In this case...I have no comment.

I've never been asked to furnish ANY proof of my citizenship, let alone identification, when returning to the US from Canada (eh!). I've never even been sent to customs for inspection...not once. And I used to spend two nights a week in Canada between my years of 19 and 21.

I used to go 5-pin bowling over there and stuff.
