Concerns about Repaving roads
The News-Herald had an article about the upcoming road improvements in LP for this summer. http://www.thenewsherald.com/storie...050403020.shtml I am happy to see that my street will be repaved but I have some questions and concerns. The article says that the city will grind down the existing road, then "cap" it with asphalt. I understand that this saves money, and allows us to fix more roads. Here are my concerns: 1.) Will my street now look black? I will be very disappointed if this is the case. The cement in front of my house is in decent shape, but the rest of the block needs to be done. 2.) How long will this "capping" last? The cement that is there is as old as my house (50+ years). I cannot image that the asphalt will last as long. Is this just a "Band-Aid" 3.) Being asphalt, it will crack and crumble by nature, but what about the snow plows and salt? These will cause a lot of damage, don't you think? I am glad that the city is fixing some of our roads, I just don't want to see the Federal grant for these roads go to waste. I feel it would be better to fix them properly rather than temporarily. |

Re: Concerns about Repaving roads
I wonder My street is mentioned, "Electric" It doesn't say certain parts of Electric, just Electric So am I to assume the obvious, that all of Electric from the North all the way South is to be done? If anyone knows please let me know Glad to hear so many roads are to be done My biggest concern is the capping getting done correctly Anywhere there's an area sinking "must be cut out first" Otherwise I can guarantee it'll back within one to two years Too bad our past politicians didn't listen sooner to this capping idea We could have had many more roads already repaired It's amazing how people view a community as a whole just based off their roads Is true, is true |

I live on Richmond and cannot believe that they are not planning to fix Richmond, New York, and even London is bad. I have complained about these streets for a long time and all they do is throw a little bit of tar in the potholes. Would some of the councilpersons please drive down these streets and tell me what you think about the streets? These streets are 10 times bad compared to Highland and some other streets that are going to be repaved. The potholes are not directly in front of my house, but if they were, I would be going to some council meetings. Does anyone live in this neighborhood? Do we need to get a petition going? I would like to know who I send the bill to when I get a flat tire from these pothole??? |

Richmond between Dix and Hazel is the pits.

Riverbank between Fort St. and Ferris is one of the worse roads I have ever seen. I can't believe this road is not on the list! |

Re: Concerns about Repaving roads
By the way, I have talked to some people, not experts mind you, but they have had some experiences in other towns that have "capped" the roads. They all say the same thing: Capping the roads is junk! It is a cheap fix that will last 5 years if your lucky. I am thinking more and more that capping the roads is a bad decision. |

Re: Concerns about Repaving roads
I know mayday. And you never hear a mention about quality. Its all about the maximum number of miles of road that can be completed. Mario is one of the supporters of "capping". He has worked in the cement business all of his life. I hope he knows what he is doing, because I trust him on this, and I will blame him if it is a failure. He's the expert. |

Re: Concerns about Repaving roads
As mentioned in another thread, when capping is done correctly it can easily last between 10 to 15 years There are many factors that will make the difference in the life of the capped road Now if a contractor comes through and mills the road down and then puts a cap on it without fixing obvious problem area's then the capping won't last On I-275 the state came in a while back and decided to cap without cutting out the bad spots first and within one year the bad spots came back in the same exact places Then a few years later the state came back and cut out the bad spots and the road has lasted much better "Any job worth doing, is worth doing right" |
