Another Dog Problem!
It was an absolutely beautiful weekend in Lincoln Park. So nice that we decided to take a walk, so we loaded up our 2 year old and put her in the wagon. It was so nice to get out and see the neighbors and neighborhood after our long winter hibernation. But the didn’t last long. We walked from Saint Johns to almost Champaign, taking Wilson and Gohl north and south. It seemed that in every other yard there were mean barking dogs. They would bark, snarl their teeth, and even try to jump over the fence to get us. I can assure you that we did nothing to provoke these animals. Half way through our walk, I found us walking back and forth across the street to avoid these dogs. I think part of the problem was that we walked north/south, which by nature causes you to walk along the back yards of homes, whereas if we walked east/west, we would have walked in front of the homes. There was one spot that really had me scared, not for myself but for my daughter. We walked along the yard and all of a sudden two huge dogs (I won’t name the breed) were lunging at us over the fence. One of the dogs was jumping so high, that I thought he was going to make it over the fence. Then I looked ahead and saw the fence was in such disrepair, that I thought he was going to be able to jump over it. It was a standard chain-link fence, but in this section, the top bar was bent down, and the fencing was partially rolled up towards the ground, leaving not only a gap, but a shorter fence. We quickly crossed the street to get away, but I though if that dog got loose, crossing the street wouldn’t help, because he could easily run us down. Luckily the dogs could not jump over the fence, but not from a lack of trying. The whole thing was just a terrifying experience! So much for trying to get out and enjoy the weather. |

Re: Another Dog Problem!
I live near Gohl and Wilson. I live on the corner of New York. I think I know the dogs of which you are speaking of. I can't walk on that side of the street. I leave my dog out on the chain during the evening, but she only barks at squirrels and if someone is on a bike. I bet your child was scared, I would have been.

Re: Another Dog Problem!
Thank you jeyhey and lpgurl06.
I think the time has come to give some serious thought as to what types of dogs we must ban from this city. Obviously Pit Bulls are at the top of the list. There are several other vicious breeds as well. It was one thing to own a dog in the 50s, it is quite a different thing today. Do we really need to keep a dog in residential areas? I think not.

Re: Another Dog Problem!
Lpgurl, the area that this occured as best as I can remember was on Gohl, between maybe Highland and Riverbank. I'll have to "drive" (definitely not walk) by today and I can tell you for sure. It is even more upsetting that possibly this is not an isolated incedent. I mean what has this come to? The dogs control the whole block now?

Re: Another Dog Problem!
Magoo, I wouldn't have felt this way a week ago, but now I agree with you. Sometimes it takes an occurance like this to realize that something has to be done, this is ubsurd. It's only my opinion but, I feel that if either of those two dogs got out that they would seriously injure and mame a person (and possibly worse). I am behind you a 100%. Tell me where to sign the petition and I am there! |

Re: Another Dog Problem!
It is not "dogs" in general that should be banned...what should be adressed is how they are taken care of and or housed. Obviously fences should be in good condition and at a safe height. More aggressive type dogs that may be able to jump a fence should be chained up a safe distance from the fences, and owners should pay attention to their dogs...if they are barking, go see why. Dogs can be trained not to bark at people merely passing by, but still bark to alert owners of approaching people or people being somewhere on the property that they should not be. I think the idea that dogs should not be in residential areas is absurd and ridiciouls. They day someone told me I could not have my dogs would be the day a huge battle would incur, and I assure you I would fight it to the bitter end. Jeyhey, I am you had such a bad experience, and I hope that some dog owners may have read this and take into consideration what they need to do to make things safe and pleasant for everyone.

Re: Another Dog Problem!
My uncle lives on Applewood, and his neighbors across the street had some big dogs. I can't exactly remember what they were, but this little boy was back there with his friend, and the dogs maimed him. His back was ripped to shreds, and the kid needed a bunch of stitches. I don't think that animals that can be provoked to cause SERIOUS HARM should be allowed in this city. We live in a compacted area, and the dogs have gotten out of hand. Everyone should get a cat. They don't have to go outside, and I don't think they could maim and kill even a full-sized person.

Re: Another Dog Problem!
Squishy you make some good points, but I am sure that your dogs are well behaved and trained. I think you are right that a lot of times it is the owners, not the dogs, but we cannot ban people, can we? Robbie makes an even better point. I seriously thought that I would have needed a gun to protect my family. I have thought about carrying mace with me, but with these particular dogs, I think it would have just made them all more viscious. And of course, if I would have maced those dogs, you know the owner would have shown up then. I am sure he/she would have been all ready to get in my face if I did that, but let me tell you I was ready to get into their face yesterday! |

Re: Another Dog Problem!
One time a huskie from down the street attacked my dog. My poor little dog was afraid to go outside for weeks. I am not sure how it got out but it almost bit me once.
