Candy Machines in school
I was just reading an article online about a Wyoming school that has decided to pull out soda and candy machines and replace them with "healthy" options http://portal.wowway.com/news/read....4069&ps=scitech ...I wonder why more schools don't do the same thing, especially with the increased concern with obesiety and all? I mean, I know that if kids want candy or sodas they will get them whether they are in school or not...they will just bring them from home or the near by party store, but maybe (just maybe) they will start opting for a healthier choice....what do you think? All views and opinons are welcome **note this is no way meant to single out the teens or youth as "being obese" , Its just meant as an observation sparked by teh above mentioned article

Re: Candy Machines in school
LPHS was going to do this last year. My math teacher had been keeping us updated. The school was going to take out all pop machiens and replace them with juice and water machines. They were going to take out the fountain pop dispensers and replace them with juice and water dispensers. They were going to just take the candy machines out and replace them with nutritional foods. Whatever happened to this...I dont know.

Re: Candy Machines in school
I see the LPHS Cafeteria actually has vending machines. They sell soda pop and candy. RIDICULOUS. In my day there were no vending machines. No sweets except for the dessert that was offered in the hot lunch lines. To drink you could buy white milk or chocolate milk. If you didn't like milk you had to drink water. No wonder these kids teeth are rotting right out of their heads. The school cafeteria's of today is a Dentist nightmare. I thank you.

Mr. Magoo, did you want me to see if Robin can default your settings to when you go to make a post it automatically puts in "In my day" so you don't have to keep typing it.

Re: Candy Machines in school
We didn't have any vending machines "in my day" either. No Pop. You could buy ice cream sandwiches and Hostess Twinkies in the lunch lines. Food was subsidised by the State. Milk was two cents (even in those years that was a bargain) A hot lunch was a buck or so.

Re: Candy Machines in school
I agree junk food shouldn't be sold at schools. But their teeth aren't rotting out because of it. Fluoride toothpaste & proper brushing will do the job. There is a sealant available for teeth too. I don't know of many kids with filling like older people. Bad teeth can be heritage. |

Re: Candy Machines in school
Mr. Magoo is just jealous. In his day, candy was only something you read about in science-fiction novels. It didn't exist yet.

Re: Candy Machines in school
Why do you need vending machines in schools - healthy or not? What's wrong with a lunch and the occasional water spigot? Next we'll absolutely "need" Applebee's in the schools. I could never understand this myself.

Do not expect me to believe that kids "brush and floss" like you try to make me believe. I have seen too many rotten teeth in these kids heads. The kids do not brush properly and the parents do not take them to the dentist. But back to vending machines in school. There is a food line, if they do not like what is being served, let them bring a lunch. I certainly did. There is no reason for kids to be drinking pop at lunch. No reason at all. It is only a device for the school to make money. The school and PTA are willing to sacrafice good health and strong teeth for a few extra dollars. CRIMINAL!! |
