I am not sure if anyone has noticed this but on Southfield by the community board or whatever you would like to call it, on the right hand side (if you are coming from the 7-11 side) there is a flag missing. Look for it, its not there. Also who is in charge of the flags? Because alot of them are very torn up and need to be retired. Someone please do something about it. It makes the city look lazy and unpatriotic.

Actually, what I wold really like to see, is the multiple variations of the Old Glory that there have been since the beginning of our nation.

That would be

• the Betsy Ross flag (13 stars in a circle) of June 14, 1777

• the Bennington Flag of 1777 which has the stars in an arch pattern with two above (one to the left and one to the right) and a large "76" under the arch.

• the Star Spangled Banner which had 15 stars and 15 stripes (Vermont and Kentucky) and was the one that was flown when Francis Scott Key penned our national anthem in September of 1814. This flag was used from 1795 until 1818 when it was changed to...

• the flag of 1846 which had 28 stars.

• the flag of 1861 which had 34 stars.

• the flag of 1908 which had 46 stars.

• the flag of 1912 which had 48 stars.

Im ...did I hear you right? Flags are too expensive? No way...have you seen the posts about the cell phone bills that the city pays for? Or all the repairs to the roads and buildings in Lincoln Park? I've always had a fascination with flags.

I have a pretty good collection myself.

I have a US flag with 48 stars on it. I also have a holiday size US flag. I even have a WWII era Japanese (rising sun) flag (it's a replica). And I have a bunch of others.

And of course I have a Michigan flag.

Question? Does anyone proper Protocol for a foreign flag being lowered to half staff? I am not asking for opinions regarding the lowering of a foreign flag. I am curious if it is proper protocol to lower a foreign flag to half staff when we are lowering the U.S. Flag.

As I remember, the U.S. Flag is always suppose to be slightly higher than the flag of a foreign country. However, when it is necessary to lower the U.S. Flag for some reason, is it "proper protocol" to lower the foreign flag at the same time?

It is true that the American flag should always be raised higher than state or foreign government flags.

I'm curious about the issue of the foreign flag, too.

I do know that the proper protocol for flying a US flag at half mast is to first raise it to full staff, then lower it to half mast. Before taking the flag down for the evening, it should once again be raised to full mast before being brought down.

When I was in the Army I was taught the U.S. Flag was always suppose to be just a bit higher than any other flags. The U.S. Flag is suppose to never be "dipped" to Royalty.

During the Montreal Olympics, they dipped the flag for the Queen of England during the opening ceremonies. A lot of controversy came about over the incident
