Detroit News story on LP receiving road grant
http://www.detnews.com/2005/nngross.../R05-139207.htm Lincoln Park gets $1 million grant for road fixes Funds will go toward the reconstruction of the heavily traveled River Drive near Ecorse Creek. By Christopher M. Singer / The Detroit News LINCOLN PARK -- The city has received a $1 million federal grant for road repairs and will spend it all in one place. According to William Bohlan, new superintendent of public works, the Transportation Improvement grant will be spent reconstructing River Drive. River Drive runs for more than one mile near Ecorse Creek and connects Wyandotte to Southgate, so it is heavily traveled. Bohlan, who came to Lincoln Park from a similar post in Oak Park, said the road is so bad, it can't just be resurfaced. It must be reconstructed. Bohlan said water from Ecorse Creek may have undermined the soil under the road. Engineers can make an assessment once the roadway is removed. He credited U.S. Rep. Carolyn Cheeks-Kilpatrick, D-Detroit, with obtaining the federal money for Lincoln Park. As one of Detroit's inner-ring suburbs -- 11 miles from downtown Detroit -- Lincoln Park's infrastructure is aging. About 40,000 residents live in the 5.9-square-mile city. "Here in Lincoln Park, it's really serious," Bohlan said. The city will spend $2 million in 2005 resurfacing five miles of roads, including heavily traveled Champaign and the bridge on Lafayette at Outer Drive, near Interstate 75. That money comes from local tax dollars generated through a 2.2-mill -- $2.20 in property taxes per each $1,000 of state equalized valuation -- roads tax approved by voters. The tax generates $1.7 million a year in funding for roads, but Bohlan said some funds were left over from 2004. Bohlan said some water mains and sewers date to the 1920s. He predicted that infrastructure will need major repairs sooner rather than later. You can reach Chris Singer at (734) 462-2093 or .

Re: Detroit News story on LP receiving road grant
I need some help understanding the road repair for Fort Street this spring and summer....in the newspaper they say they are resurfacing between April and July and then in the next breath they say that next year Fort Street will be tore up for new sewer work....isn't that sort of backwards and shouldn't they do the sewer work this year and resurface next year or do i have this story confused? |

Re: Detroit News story on LP receiving road grant
I know that the State is doing thier resurface of Fort Street between April and July. I am not familiar with the sewer work tho. It is still our tax dollars, even tho the state is doing it. So that is a concern. This years Downriver Cruise falls at the end of July tho...and this event has a big effect on our community that reaches deeper than the immediate financial impact it creates, so I'm glad they won't be doing the sewers first because it would definitely kill the cruise. Actually, I think the resurface is unnecessary anyway. Theres a few spots where some work could be done, but I don't see the need to resurface it in length. Then again, I'm not an engineer either so what do I know. What article did you see the Fort Street Work Referenced?
