Diliberative Polling for LP

I got this email today and thought I'd put it up for anyone interested:

Quote:
Dear Colleague:

This is to alert you to two election-related events that will have, I hope, some short and long-term significance.

The first is a PBS broadcast on Thursday October 21 at 8:00 p.m. EST reporting on Deliberation Day, a seventeen-city Deliberative Polling event just staged on October 16. The concept of a national Deliberation Day is presented in a book of the same name, and it is based on the successes of Deliberative Polls, in which randomly selected samples of voters spend a day or so deliberating on major issues of public policy. In the seventeen-city event conducted this past Saturday, the themes for discussion were national security and economic policy. The PBS broadcast will cover the discussions and report whether, and how many, voters changed their minds on these issues, as well as the Bush v. Kerry choice, after a day's discussion.

The second thing to mention is the establishment of CitizenSovereignty.org, a non-partisan and non-profit corporation whose purpose is to deepen citizen involvement in American political life. Our projects include building popular support for two things:a pre-election Deliberation Day holiday for citizen deliberation; and, for a plan of fundamental federal campaign finance reform, presented in the book Voting With Dollars. The organization's new website is at www.CitSov.org. Take a look and let me know what you think.

Best regards,

Bill Corbett

Executive Director

CitizenSovereignty.org

I'am in favor of more citizen involvement . A National holiday for elections would be a good idea .

I agree RN222. The idea is actually based on studies that show that things like what we're doing are very progressive and lend to positive growth.

Quote:
The proposal is based on the successes of a recent innovation in communications science, Deliberative Polling. In Deliberative Polls, a randomly selected sample of citizens doesn’t simply answer questions over the telephone. They spend a day or so deliberating on major issues of public policy. Over thirty-five DPs have now been conducted in the United States and abroad, from Britain and Denmark to Australia and Bulgaria.

Our site is in such a form that it can be utilized as this innovative communiciations tool they refer to as Dilliberative Polling.

http://cdd.stanford.edu/polls/index.html
from that link:
Quote:
Citizens are often uninformed about key public issues. Conventional polls represent the public's surface impressions of sound bites and headlines. Deliberative Polling® is an attempt to use television and public opinion research in a new and constructive way. The polling process reveals the conclusions the public would reach, if people had opportunity to become more informed and more engaged by the issues.

In Deliberative Polling®: Toward a Better-Informed Democracy, Professor James Fishkin gives an executive summary of Deliberative Polling® and reviews the results of polls conducted in Britain, Australia, Denmark, and in the US

Our site is doubly usefull because 1) It shows where people are uninformed and 2) it offers the information to Inform them.

The flavor of the community is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with data coming in constantly.

It's amazing to me...of corse my opinion is slightly biased tho.
