More Questions for Mr. Myers
Mr. Myers, Forgive me if I have missed previous posts in which you have answered the following questions: • What qualifications do you have to be Treasurer of the City of Lincoln Park? • Have you ever declared bankruptcy, either personally or in the context of a business? • Have you ever been fined or convicted of tax evasion or tax fraud (local, state or federal)? • Have you ever been convicted of a felony? • Do you see any problems with the current administration of the office of the Treasurer? And if so, • How do you intend to improve the Office of the Treasurer of the City of Lincoln Park? Any particular areas? I would ask these same questions of the other candidates for Treasurer, but I am sure I would not receive a response. Thanks in advance.

I'll be casting the following votes:
City Council: • Thomas A. Murphy • Valerie Brady • Michael Lemuel • Thomas McPartlin • John R. Nelligan • James E. Rutherford City Treasurer: Craig Sochocki Proposal R: NO |

I believe I have already answered the questions I feel are appropriate in another thread.

Re: More Questions for Mr. Myers
I don't believe you answered all of them. If you did, would you please direct us to the appropriate thread. Thank you. Since those questions were posed by Rubberarm, I'd like to see all of them answered. They seem like logical and fair questions to ask someone running for treasurer. |

I find the personal questions irrelevant and offensive. If you want to know why more people don't run for office look in the mirror Rubberarm. Invasion of personal privacy! Everyone complains about Brown or Breeding running unopposed, maybe it's because people don't want to subject themselves to the inquisition of folks like Rubberarm or anyone else who asks these personal questions. Now hardhitting questions about polans if elected are absolutely fair game in my opinion. But next time anyone questions why more good people don't run for office, look at this thread and understand it's because people simply refuse to put themselves and their families through the meat grinder. Of course that's just my opinion, others may vary. TGND

Re: More Questions for Mr. Myers
Such circumstances of why people probably don't run for office are solidified by such things as John Kerry's attack against Vice President Dick Cheney because he has a lesbian daughter. How does that matter? It doesn't affect how he performs his duties. Sure, it's nice to know...it makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside knowing that you know something personal about him...but it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things.

Re: More Questions for Mr. Myers
I can see how some of those questions may be relevent for certain positions...but not as a tax collector. Perhaps if the position called for handling of cash or securities...different story. |

Re: More Questions for Mr. Myers
Though I shoulda known that VS would somehow luad Bush or his cronies , I do agree that personal stuff has probably cost us some pretty damn good leaders who simply had made mistakes in their lives. Look we hold people to impossible standards and then wonder why someone who has no vices can't relate to the general public. Personally, I don't trust a man who has no vices. Even if a candidate has made mistakes I want to know only that they have learned from their mistakes and become a better person for it. I want to know how they will deal with the public on the issues that matter. Not a "have you ever....." session. TGND |

Re: More Questions for Mr. Myers
MrMyer, What is your thoughts on what some would call a Totalitarian Democracy, in which lawfully elected representatives maintain the integrity of a nation whose citizens, have the right to vote, but have little to no control in the decision making process of the governement, and how this form of Governement utilizes the free market, to gain its wealth thru that of the independent/corporate investor via taxes rarely ever voted on by the people. And whats your opinion on how said Nation is deeply rooted in Christian Judiah philosophys, yet they protect the rights of people to print such trash as " Presbyterian Chicks in bondage" its a leather back cover ( comes with a whip), I have an extra copy if you're interested!!! anyway these are things I feel very strongly about, so could you please ansewer in 50 words or less!!! Re: More Questions for Mr. Myers
This is precisely why I am turned off by the idea of running for any public office. I know that the second I do, my life would become an open book. I've been arrested for a few stupid things (warrant for not paying a ticket, having my drivers license suspended as a result of the same ticket and getting pulled over while driving). I don't have any felony arrests...and all but one charge was dropped. Would this affect my ability to perform my duties? No. But the point is that people will try to use it against me simply to make themselves look better. |

Anyone aspiring to be in a position that handles monies should have a clean record. I would not want our treasurer to have been convicted of any money-related crime. If anybody out there wouldn't mind, please voice your position. |

Re: More Questions for Mr. Myers
I don't have a prolem with it, as far as bankruptsy goes, in fact if he tried his hand in a business and fail, more power to him for a least trying. If he was embezzeling or something like that it might be a bit different, of course it would depend on how long ago it happend if he is in his 50's and it happend in his early 20's, but has never had a problem since , what are we suppose to do punish him for ever??? Re: More Questions for Mr. Myers
I agree. Some bankruptcies can occur at no fault of the person. I would not hold that against Myers. A conviction for something years and years ago such as shoplifting and the person had no further issues, I wouldn't hold that old stuff against him either.

Re: More Questions for Mr. Myers
A. If he filed for bankruptcy due to personal issues what does that have to do with his job as Treasurer. I don't know if he did or didn't and I certainly would not ask him. I care about what he wants to do as Treasurer in the future. B. OK, if he had a tax evasion conviction that might have some relevance since he would be in charge of collecting taxes. So I concede that point. C. Felony conviction. My thought would be what and when. He appears to be late forties or early fifties. I think I read somewhere he was in Viet Nam so that would probably make him at least 50. If he got in trouble when he was 25 I don't care. He is a totally different person now. I have certainly changed as I have grown older. Hasn't everyone? If he was convicted of Murder last year that would have some bearing. But I really don't know how it would affect his job as Treasurer. Look I am a pretty strong Anti-Bush guy. But I always thought it was crap when they tried to bring up that Bush did coke in his youth or that he got arrested for Drunk Driving when he was in his twenties. I don't care and it only made me feel for what he had to endure. I disagree with his politics, but I don't hate the man. People should not have to be subjected to this crap just because they are asking to SERVE. Unfortuantely, politics is a tough business and we end up with exactly what we deserve. TGND |

Re: More Questions for Mr. Myers
I can see if someone was convicted of a misdemeanor when he was 20 that maybe he is a changed person and it's now irrelevant. A felony, however, I don't hold that same amount of forgiveness for, without some sort of explanation. I don't care when a felony was convicted. If it was, I'd like to know about it. And I'd like to know BEFORE someone was elected. Questionning someone about it after they become elected, as someone proposed here would be fair, is too late. They're already in office. A felony is a pretty serious offense and shouldn't be swept under the rug, no matter if it happened in 1984 or 2004. Look at job applications in the private sector. I've never seen an application that didn't ask on it, "Have you ever been convicted of a felony?" I happen to think that's a fair question for anyone running for office. |

I am told that public urination is not only a felony, but will get you on the sex offenders list. Makes you wonder about what should and should not be a "felony" |

IF that is true, then hopefully the person when admitting to being convicted of a felony will explain the innocence of it. I would rather err on the side of caution and insist people answer the question. I'd imagine that cases of "public urination" would likely be in the minority. Just because a small crime can get lopped into the same category as larger crimes, I don't think we should give people a free pass to simply avoid answering it. |

Re: More Questions for Mr. Myers
I only posted that to point out that Obstruction of Justice (something like hindering a Police investigation of a crime) is a misdemeanor, yet peeing on as fence post is a felony. Which is more important to you? If you ask the question "Do you have any felony convictions?" the first guy can say no and the second guy has to say yes and go into a long explanantion. then of course some folks won't beleive it anyhow. Yet there goes guy number 1 free and easy. Doesn't seem right to me. What about someone who had an expunged record. Oftentimes young people make foolish errors of judgement. Oftentimes these convictions are expunged from their record. If asked about it they can legally and truthfully say NO. The system says it never happened. I still think that maybe "Have you been convicted of any crime dealing with breach of public trust in the past 10 years?" is maybe a more relevant question. I guess I just hate seeing all of our fellow citiznes who try to serve getting the colonoscope. Like they say, no good deed goes unpunished. |
