Councilman Mario DiSanto will do Super in next weeks Primary. Of that I have no doubt.

Talking to my senior friends, the only incumbent that could have a problem is Councilman Vaslo. He is not well liked among the seniors. And as we all know, the seniors will be a heavy influence in the Primary.

I see Mr Vaslo getting re-elected, but I see him coming in 6th. Had there been a strong challenger, I would say Mr Vaslo would have been in danger of retaining his seat.

Ms Lulko getting the ax? Hardly. I see her winning the Primary by a good 15% over her nearest challenger.

Just remember, tho. The outcome of the council race in the primary means nothing. The only race being decided Tuesday is the treasurer's race. The council race, while on the ballot next week, won't mean a thing under it's decided for sure in November.

Magoo, put your bias aside. The race for city Treasurer is the only race going on in this election. Sure, one or two newcomers may unseat an unstable councilperson or two, But with the Treasurer race there are no incumbants and each candidate is fairly well known throughout the city. This Treasure race is going to be one of the best and closest we have seen in years. It will be very difficult to predict who will win this election.

Well, the way I see it is if Mr. Disanto doesn't make it back in, he won't be taking up parking spaces in front of the city hall side door that could be used by the average everyday taxpaying citizen. I see his pick up sitting outside the side door quite a bit, right up front.

It's a strain to understand him. But, I finally understand him. I am surprised for all the years he's been in the US that he hasn't taken whatever amount of English classes he would need to diminish his accent. He seems to have a large English vocabulary, but the accent is very severe. Many immigrants try very hard to reduce their foreign accents once they decide to live in the US. DiSanto apparently didn't think it was important. I think it is important especially for someone running for and holding political office.

At least Mr DiSanto tries to communicate with the community. Mr Vaslo sits like a bump on a log. Says nothing. His only concern is to ensure he goes along with whatever Mr Brown and Mr Kandes says.

An accent is hard to control. When you first learn to speak, you learn a certain dialect that stays with you for your entire life. Very, very few people are able to control their dialects.

Some people can alter their accent...like movie stars, for instance. But this is often done with professional training.

To see for yourself how hard it is, try altering your "American" accent. Try speaking in a thick Italian accent...or Austrian...or German...or Dutch...or British...or Japanese...or Arab. It's an extremely difficult thing to do. We think it's easy because we were born speaking like this. But put yourself in their shoes and try to speak English in their accents. I bet you can't do it nearly as well as they can...just like they can't speak in an "American" accent as well as we can.

Instead of lambasting the man for his thick accent, I actually commend him for having the ability to speak multiple languages. He speaks more languages than I can. And I'm sure he's well aware that he is hard to understand sometimes...how many decades has he lived here? Does anyone really think the man "doesn't care" that people can't understand him sometimes? I'm sure he does care...and I'm sure it frustrates him.

Suggesting that it's "not important" for him to try to diminish his accent is unfair, in my opinion. I doubt he has very much control over that...anymore than a balding person can control their hair loss. It's something you are born into.

Couldn't have said it better myself VS. My grandmother came to this country in 1927, 'til the day she died a few years ago, her accent was still very strong. One thing she did say is that now she was an American and she would only speak English. Go to Dearborn and ask people what they think of that statement. My wife had a patient at her work tell her that she needs to learn Arabic because she works in Dearborn. What a crock.

Quite a few of my family members are immigrants. I understand that it is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to drop one's native accent.
On the other hand, I'm also aware (having studied languages and linguistics) that DiSanto could have reduced his Italian accent had he put his mind to it. I didn't say to eliminate the accent. I have European relatives that have lived here for only 5 and 10 years and they have reduced their accent considerably because they tried to and work on it. DiSanto has chosen not to. If he had tried, he would be easier to understand. No judgement or criticism on my part intended as I'm very sensitive to those with foreign accents.

Are you giving any thought to any of the variable factors? For example:

• What part of Europe are they from? Some parts carry much thicker accents than others
• How old are they? The younger they are, the easier it is to "adopt" a new accent.
• What is their household like? If everyone in a household speaks the same thick accent, it becomes difficult for anyone in the home to not use it.

Again, you know this to be fact? Can you support your claims with any proof? Maybe a notorized affadavit from Councilman DiSanto himself that explicitly states that he chose not to? If not, then all you are doing is assuming. You know...assume? That evil little thing that you accuse so many others on this website of doing from time to time?

Out of curiousity: Between studying languages and liguistics and having the uncanny ability to follow the motions of peoples wrists to determine what they are writing (as you said you've been trained to do before)...I'm curious as to what type of work you do? Your profile says you're in law enforcement...do you work for the Secret Service? NSA? CIA? FBI?

You know...I know of someone who used to work as a freelance writer for The News-Herald...and I can see how such "training" might have benefited them in that line of work. You wouldn't know anything about that, though...would you?
