Granholm's comments on the Pope
Governor Granholm’s Statement on Passing of Pope John Paul II LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm and First Gentleman Daniel Mulhern issued the following statement on Saturday, April 2, on the passing of Pope John Paul II. “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Pope John Paul II. We join with citizens and Catholics around Michigan and the world in praying for and mourning the loss of a beloved spiritual leader. He has lived an extraordinary life of service, experiencing and making history in times of turbulence and hope. With his many papal journeys – including his visit to Michigan – John Paul II reminded followers that ‘hands are the heart’s landscape.’ Throughout his life, the Holy Father’s hands touched countless hearts and uplifted the least among us. He taught us that we can improve our world simply by lifting up others – and that will be his lasting legacy on this earth. Whether you are guided by faith or by hope, Pope John Paul’s message was a beacon of light and will continue to illuminate life's path for millions around the globe.” # # #

Re: Granholm's comments on the Pope
I just thought I'd bump this topic since a few of our city leaders had some words about the Passing of the Pope, and maybe some of you have some things to say too. |

Re: Granholm's comments on the Pope
I remember when the Pope first became Pope. This was before Cable TV. The funeral and picking a new Pope was the only thing on television for almost a week. How many of you remember this? How many remember Pope John Paul the 1st died after only a couple of months of being made Pope. There were even rumors that he was murdered. When Pope John Paul II became Pope there was a lot of discussion that he would be killed by the Communists. Remember, the Communists were every bit a threat as the Terrorist threat is today. I remember when the attempted assassination of the Pope. It was right at the same time of the attempted assassintion of President Reagan. They became good friends and many say they shared this common bond. I remember when the Pope came to Pontiac. What I remember most was there were no commercial air traffic while he was here. The only thing in the sky were military aircraft. You could actually see low flying military helecopters with their missiles attached. I remember how active he was when he first became Pope. The one bad thing about him being around so long is we had to watch him grow old and frail.

I am not Catholic, but I look at Pope John Paul II as a leader for all religions. |

Re: Granholm's comments on the Pope
I'm not a real religious man myself. But I'm in awe over how the entire globe has come together to pay tribute to this man. Religion or not...he made the world a better place by leading people to be good. I saw John Stewart (from Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" at the Detroit Opera House Friday night...he summed it best (paraphrasing): "The Pope's last good deed was to let himself die shortly after Terry Shiavo...so the media rats would leave her family alone and focus on him." It was used in the context of a joke. But I can't help but think that maybe there is something to that. Divine intervention? Hap coincedence? Whatever...it happened and it did take the pressure of Terry Shiavo's family.

Re: Granholm's comments on the Pope
As a catholic, a father of a daughter in a catholic school and an usher for the same church, it's been a long, tiring week.

Re: Granholm's comments on the Pope
No offense, but the last thing I need to hear is Granholm praising this great man. She more than anyone has slapped the Pope in the face with her poilitical actions: Every one goes agains the Pope. And thats not to say that I agree or disagree with her, and I realize that she probably is not Roman Catholic, but... Just keep your mouth shut and stay out of it then. |
