Fort St. Repaving?
When is the Fort St. repaving project going to end? My goodness, it seems like they have been working at a snails pace. Didn't they begin this project on June 27th? It seems to me that it didn't take this long for the 1st half of this project to finish in the North end. Maybe there is a north end bias? |

Re: Fort St. Repaving?
They are completely re-doing the North-bound lane near Champaign in order to smooth-out the curve. This means digging all the way down, laying gravel and what have you, re-doing sewer tops, curbs, and then the cement substructure and then the blacktop. It's a lot more work than the first section.

Re: Fort St. Repaving?
I believe they are going to finish the new curve at Champaign then finish it. Although, there is a patch job by St. John in the left lane of the northbound side that my Excursion almost jumps into the construction when it hit is. I personally am getting tired of it. It seems like they do more standing around than anything. I see the trucks out there even on Sundays with the overhead lights flashing.

Re: Fort St. Repaving?
Sure, it is probably more efficient to lay the new pavement all at once, but if they have this many problems at Fort and Champaign, maybe they should repave everything but Fort/Champaign so the rest of LP doesn't have to suffer. It is worse to cross Fort St. than to travel on it even with the loss of two lanes. It is beating the crap out of my car, even at very slow speeds. |

Re: Fort St. Repaving?
Honestly I was thinking the opposite. I was thinking that the whole project has been well managed thus far. Of course I am not out there right at rush hour, but if I was, I'd probably find an alternate route. |

Re: Fort St. Repaving?
I remember several years ago, shortly before the first Cruisin' Downriver when Fort St. was resurfaced for the first time after it was rebuilt. They would work on a section about 3 miles long. At about 6pm, they'd bring out a machine to strip off the top layer, then people and equipment would come along to remove the bits that the first machine couldn't get (like arond manholes, etc.). After that, a vacuum truck would come by to clean up gravel, etc. Finally, the asphalt truck, paving equipment and hot rollers would finish the job. Start time: 6pm, finish time: not sure, but long before rush hour the next morning. It's pretty clear that when planning repaving and rebuilding projects such as this, the impact on the traffic needs to be considered. Things such as increased fuel consumption, pollution emissions, vehicle damage, lost work time, increased likelihood of road rage incidents, etc. need to be considered. It's rather irritating to see Fort St. (and I-94, Telegraph Rd. and others) all torn up, while no work is being done on them, My daily commute from Dearborn to home includes passing by the southbound Southfield ramp to I-94, where I see traffic bumper to bumper, with the roads and ramps torn up, and no one working on them. I would like to see road constructions projects like this being worked on from dawn until dusk. Oh sure, there will be residents who live near these roads that will complain of the noise in the evenings. Let 'em. Their complaints will certainly be fewer than those from the drivers who have to put up with the construction issues. |

What would give you that impression? Stufuller is right, I remember that first mill and cap, and it went real quick (just like the northend this year). It seems as though nothing south of Champaign has been touched in 30 or even 60 days! BTW: Its not like they can blame the weather. |

Re: Fort St. Repaving?
I would vote to let the State take over all of our roads. Then at least, slow or fast, they might have a better chance of being re-surfaced. I wonder while they are pouring out the asphalt on Fort St, would they fill a wheel barrow for me so I can repair the pot holes on my street? |
