Food Basics likely to Close
It was printed in today's Detroit Freep that Food Basics would close or sell all of it stores. They specifically called out the LP store as one that will be "sold to an undisclosed buyer". I wonder what that means? http://www.freep.com/money/business...7e_20050427.htm |

Just thinking out loud...I beleive that the Food Basics store (on Champaign) is larger than the current Farmer Jack's on Emmons. I wonder if the chain would move the Emmons store into the location of Food Basics on Champaign, and put some distance between them and Meijer's? |

I think that everyone who gave Mr. Murphy a hard time about his views on Food Basic, owe him an apology.

I wonder if he knew, like many of us, that it didn't stand a chance. But I think the controversy was over his comments about the city of Melvindale, not about Food Basics. |

I too believe the location of the store on Fort & Champaign is a better location, with better parking, and looks nicer As far as distance from Meijer there's not much difference to speak of Not to mention it put it closer to Aldi Personally I believe the closing of the Food Basic is going to greatly benefit Aldi which already does well enough And, as the economy keeps moving along slowly and perhaps even slower later on, I believe stores like Aldi will see increasing business as people have less $$$ to work with |

The building at Champaign looks like a nicer building on the outside than a lot of businesses. It is also in a good location, so I think we stand to see a good business take it over. Jason Alley called me today to get my comment on the situation. He asked me if I was glad to see Food Basice close. I explained to him that I am not happy to see businesses in Lincoln Park close when they benefit the city. However, I believe that it closed because a lot of people felt the same way I did about their business tacticts. When people see big business going after their employees, cutting their benefits and slashing their pay, they think about how they would feel if it were them. They respond by taking their shopping somewhere else like the quality stores of Meijer & Kroger, in Lincoln Park where their employees are treated better and people have a better variety of products. No, I am not happy to see what I feel is a ligit business fail, I just think that if the business owners had not been so money hungry, and had treated their employees at least as well as Meijer & Kroger, they may still be in business! |

How many business will want to open in that building to loose money . How many people would want to operate a business at a loss. How much sense does that make Why would you take your money ,start a business , and give away all your investment away. I'd lock the door while I had a few bucks Left. Why don't they move the City Hall into that building . Great parking, good location . We've got councilmembers that like to give money away that we don't have , and pay for benefits we can't afford. It may work,a monument to goverment spending. A reminder to the people it's not your money it's ours! If we give it away we will get you to pay us more You OWE it to your employees. So pay up or we put YOU out. Go live somewhere else ..

Hey Mind, please don't give our monument builders on the council any ideas about the Food Basics building. They are doing well enough on their own planning to spend two million dollars on this pipe dream as it is. We have too many other FAR more important things to worry about without seriously considering the expenduature of TWO MILLION DOLLARS on fluff like a new city hall! |
