Today I got my nails done. The whole time I was sitting at the table the man doing my nails was speaking in Chinese to some of the other workers. It made me feel insecure not knowing what he was saying and made me feel like I was out of place. Then I started to think about the opinions that many people have about foreigners coming into America but still speaking their native langauge. There are some foreigners that come to America and do not even bother to learn English.

My personal opinion, although it may sound harsh: If you want to speak your native language so badly stay in the country where it is spoken as a first language. Do not come to America and not bother to learn the language and do not come to America and only speak your native language although you know English.

What do you guys think?

I don't have a problem with people speaking in thier native languages. But if this guy is doing your nails, he is in his place of business and as a professional courtesy should not be blabbering while doing your nails, in chinese OR English.

To me, it's more of a respect issue than a racial issue. If I'm at the mall and a family is shopping and carrying on a conversation in thier native language, it doesn't really bother me.

But if someone wants to get a job and deal with the public then they obviously should know how to speak proper English and annunciate properly.

Otherwise, It doesn't bother me.

You see how we are backwords. Several issues here.

1. You are getting your nails done where they speak Chinese because Amereicans will no longer do that type "service" jobs.

2. I bet they were speaking Phillipino and you could not tell the differnece.

3. You went there because they were cheaper than where they speak English doing nails.

4. Why don't you go learn a second language

5. Everywhere else but America schools require you learn two languages

6.The English language is not the "official language" of the United States the founding fathers debated this and voted "no" on inserting it in the Constitution. America was the land of the free.

7. You are just plain mad you do not know what they are saying, and to lazy to do anything about it.

8. What is a American? Irish, Jewish, Italian, Japanese, American Indian, Spanish? the answer is all of the above. If they took the time to learn our language then maybe we should do the same. When I was a child I asked my grandmother to teach me her native Macedonian language. She told me that we are in America and here we speak English. Once she came to this country she didn't speak the language anymore.

FYI Sinkhole I have studied another language for the past three years and I know sign language. I also know some French. Therefore I know more than one other langauge. FYI once again both the nail places I go to have the same prices and one is filled with Chinese people and the other one is an American run store in Melvindale. Most nail places no matter the race charge $20 for a full set. FYI again most American colleges require you to have two years of another language such as Alboin College. Your post was very rude seeing as you dont know me so there was no sense in posting your number 5 because you didnt know until I just told you that I know other langauges. I agree with Iheart, I think it has more to due with professionalism than anything else. When you are in a place of business you should be aware of the customer and your attention should be with the customer and not socializing with the people you work with.

This is atopic that I hate, My Grandmother never spoke English, HOWEVER!!! She would smack my father and his siblings if she heard them speaking Russian outside in public. She would tell the kids you are American in America the greatest Country in the world you speak English. This same Lady pushied for her male children even the ones not yet 18 to join the Military during world war II because as she said " You have NO ideal the evils that are done in the rest of the world"

This is why I am want our boarders closed, the people coming here now a days aren't coming because they love America they come because of the freebees they get!!!! Cross the boarder when you are about to give birth pop out a baby and bam!!! the kid is a U.S Citizen we won't split the parents up 3 week later they are on some sort of assitance. Come over here make a ton of money ripping off the S.S system ( VS have you figured this out yet) take you money 10 years later go back home live like a king.

One other thin my Grand Parents would not accept the term Russian American or any B.S like that!!!!! They were "AMERICAN" proud of it and willing to die for it!!!!! I don't see that today!!!
