Pictures of Keppen::
I was at Keppen tonight for a Girl Scout meeting and thought Id let everyone know what it looked like. First of all, it does not look like a school. When I think of an elementary school the perfect example would be Lafayette. It is brightly colored and full of fun pictures on the walls. The new Keppen has a basic color scheme of gray and white. All of the walls are white on the top half and gray on the bottom half. The students are not allowed to hang any paper in the hallways on the walls because it is considered a fire hazzard. The floor is now all tile (that was an excellent idea, the only I have seen that I have liked). The gym is plain white with none of the posters or anything on them. It looks like a jail basically. I took some pictures from my phone. Sorry if they arent the best quality but hopefully you get the idea.

Since when do schools have brightly colored halls? No wonder these young people have a hard time learning. Schools are not there for show. They are they to teach young minds.

Re: Pictures of Keppen::
Truthfully, I think the school looks fine. The only problem I have is that Lil Mandie says no paper on the wall. After raising three children, I can tell you that some of my fondest memories include seeing my children's "paper" on the walls. The kids are very proud to display their work and I think it's a shame they consider these precious drawings a "fire hazard". HOGWASH! I think that's going a bit far. I don't think paper on the walls caused a fire at Keppen! Ridiculous.

Re: Pictures of Keppen::
I think that an errant sixth-grader caused the fire Unfortunately, that's all being "kept under wraps." It is sad that little kids aren't allowed to see colorful pictures in their hallways because some moron felt compelled to set the gym curtains on fire. As far s it being bland...it's slightly more bland-looking than it was when I went there. Keppen was never really known for looking bright and pretty. |

Re: Pictures of Keppen::
It should have been. Lol. I just love Lafayette School (even thouh thats not where I attended elementary, I too am a Keppen former). The environment is amazing. The kids are always anxious to add something to the wall or the case. It is colorful and a great learning environment. LPHS isnt that bad either. Orange and blue is all over the school with pride and it is very creative. I think Keppen is the only school in the district that I have seen that does not have any bright color placed on the wall somewhere. |

Re: Pictures of Keppen::
I went to Beard Elementary school in Detroit. It is on Waterman near Fort. I was in a glass building that sat just behind the main school building. The walls were all glass, even the roof was glass. This building held two classrooms and mine was one of them. Back then they felt it was healthy to expose children to as much sunlight as possible. So even in the winter we were indoors, but still in the sunlight. Around the 3rd or 4th grade they gave up and brought our class into the main building. They used the glass classroom building as a storage building. I believe it is still there. When driving by the school on I-75 take a look into the back playground, you just may see my old classroom. |

As I remember, we were back into the main bulding by 3rd grade. That would have been the beginning of World War II. I wonder if the war had something to do with closing the glass classrooms? Everything became rationed. Can't think of what the tie-in would be. |

Greenhouses are all glass and they are warm in the winter. How do they heat those things? I wonder if Magoo's school handed out sun glasses with books. Did they have chalk boards? Where the heck were the toilets? |
