Another great white elephant?
This is what the Zilwaukee Bridge was called when it was being built, is this the newest white elephant for Michigan? http://www.wxyz.com/wxyz/nw_local_n...4122234,00.html Gateway to Detroit Bridge By Bill Proctor Web produced by Christine Lasek September 30, 2005 A new icon of Detroit has opened up along I-94. The Gateway to Detroit Bridge will welcome visitors to Detroit as they drive into the city from Metro Airport. In one of the more unusual ribbon cutting ceremonies, M-Dot workers and contractors joined the dignitaries in opening the westbound I-94 overpass at Telegraph Rd. in Taylor Friday morning. The overpass has been under construction since the spring of 2004, and the counterpoint is called the Tied Arch Bridge. The towering blue steel structure has been duplicated on a smaller scale in other states. According to Gloria Jeff, director of M-Dot, "This is not only the largest, but this is the only one through which traffic actually moves. The others that are in place in Indiana and Illinois actually have traffic going alongside of them." Jeff says the $58 million project, going between Beech Daley and Pelham, will improve traffic flow. "It is not only different in terms of the blue structure itself, but also the interchange underneath it will be what we call a single point urban interchange. What it means is that a single traffic signal will handle all the traffic movements for traffic coming on and off of the freeway here, as well as going north and south on Telegraph." This area has always been a busy corridor, but it’s getting a brand new deck and a brand new look. 130,000 vehicles pass through the area daily, and now the overpass really seems like a gateway to the city of Detroit. Jim Nicholson, TEDC Chairman, told gathered press, "In metro Detroit alone, it accounts for over $4 billion each year in economic activity, and over 50,000 jobs." While the bridge is up and open, there is still more work to be done.

With the conditions of our roads, this looks to me like more money than sense was used for this project.

I miss the old Zilwakee bridge. Sitting there for an hour on 75 waiting for the boat to go by and the bridge to come down. nott ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

Re: Another great white elephant?
It was put up for the Superbowl, its the only reason it was done, in hopes to keep the visitors from realizing the cesspool they were driving into. Rocky |
