Re: Drug Education Poll
Well I guess I will start this off...Most have probably already seen in the other post why I feel the way I do. I think these programs are very important. They may not "reach" everyone all of the time, but what about those who it did reach? As a mom myself, I think drug edcuation is extremely important, and that the edcuation should start at home...but in reality we know that many kids balk at what the mom or dad is trying to teach them and they want to go out and "learn on their own", that is where I think it is importnat to have these other avenues for the kids to see and learn from. Even if it is not the DARE program, I think something is needed or things for these kids will get worse before they ever dream about getting better. Of course this is just my opinion, and I welcome all opinions to see what page we are all on as a community.

I prefer to teach my children myself, but it does not bother me if they get extra information at school, as long as it is accurate and presented properly. |

Re: Drug Education Poll
I don't mind the D.A.R.E. programs--officers teach it, and they've most certainly dealt with drugs addicts and all before. They can honestly tell us about the extreme paths that some of them take. I was the D.A.R.E. Award Winner in 1999 at Keppen, after all! It's important that children learn from their parents, but of course, kids are sometimes desensitized to what a parent says is right or wrong. Sometimes, it takes an outside force to tell them how bad something is in order to believe it. |

Re: Drug Education Poll
**winner of the Mixter Elementary DARE essay contest** coughcough I feel that this program and the GREAT program is good for students. I liked it when they had high school students come talk to us in sixth grade about the horrors of drugs and how they see it in their lives. The officers, I had Officer Reinhart for DARE and Officer Weaver for GREAT, were great with how they explained it and answered our questions.

Re: Drug Education Poll
If I had my way, I would lock up everyone who abuses drugs. Lock them up and throw away the key. I thank you

Re: Drug Education Poll
I've never understood the concept of locking someone up and throwing away the key. If you threw it away...wouldn't one of their friends just go pick it up and let them out? If you're going to lock someone up...why don't you hang on to the key? Or lock the key up somewhere safe?

Re: Drug Education Poll
Right Magoo, and let me guess, you would cut the left hand off every thief, right? -- I favor public hangings myself. Anyhow, there cannot be too much education on this subject. It's not a solve all (only a nation of 100% dedicated parents could do this), but for many it is a necessary tool to keep them off drugs. This country seems to be focusing so much less on education on every level, everywhere. I think this fad is due to the dot.com/entrepreneurship craze permeating our culture the last 20 years. We now look at education as something second to everything else such as punishment, or motivated leadership success. We no longer need education. . . we need more prisons and more entrepreneurs. We will fall like a great oak tree if this mentality continues.
