There Will Be A New Vacant Building On Fort St.
The Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company has announced the closing of 9 Food Basic stores in the Metropolitan area. On the list are 2 stores in our area . Fort St. in Lincoln Park and Oakwood Blvd. in Melvindale. Employees will be given a severance package for their time employed with Atlantic & Pacific .The stores on the list will close their doors in 90 days. Apparently there was not enough support for this store in Lincoln Park. They failed to show the sales needed to help the parent company out of it's financial problems . There may be additional closings of the Farmer Jack stores . Employees at the Fort St.& Emmons store were told the store behind Sears may close and those employees may transfer to the Fort St. & Emmons store. This is a good example of why our elected officials need to support local business. The controversey that went on before the store opened made it an easier decision on which ones to close before Food Basics opened it's doors.

The reason this store didn't do well is because it wasn't what consumers want. It had nothing to do with the "controversey".

I didn't like the Food Basics store. It was a beautiful store after the conversation to Food Basics. And they seemed to get more customers than when it was a Farmer Jacks. I found their prices to be too high. I like Aldi's. Aldi's and Save-A-Lot for my basic stuff. Krogers or Farmer Jack's for meats and poultry. Meijers for certain sale items. That is how I shop! |

Mind, do you have a link to the list? I have a family member who works for a store outside the downriver area...and would like to see if this store is affected.

Today's newspaper said 9 out of the 10 metro Food Basics stores were closing. The newspaper article listed them. |

Fort and Champaign is a very historic corner in the city of LP. I hope it doesn't turn into a vacant lot with an empty building. The conditions of Murray's parking lot is horrible. Maybe Murray's would consider moving to this location. But then it would leave us with an empty building in another part of LP.
