LPPD and K-9 catch a thieft
Laser the K-9 working with LPPD "sniffed" out a crook recently. Here is the story from the Free Press
http://www.freep.com/news/cfp/3/040...7v_20050407.htm LINCOLN PARK Dog sniffs out man after 'fast cash' from Sears The merchandise at Sears, the store known by the slogan "Good life, Great prices," evidently wasn't priced low enough for one sticky-fingered thief. Employees at Sears, 2100 Southfield Road in Lincoln Park, contacted Lincoln Park police at 3:54 p.m. to report a theft March 25. Officers were told that a 35-year-old, 5-foot-10 black male wearing a tan coat, blue jeans and a red bandana ran from the store with stolen items and told Sears security staff that he had a gun. A 47-year-old loss-prevention associate saw the man place three portable Sony CD players, valued at $37.99 each, into a plastic bag he pulled out of his pocket. The man then put another Sony CD Walkman, valued at $44.88, into his bag, the witness told police. The Sears associate followed the man to see whether he would pay for the items. The man didn't stop at a cash register. When an employee identified himself as Sears security, the suspect reached into his pants and said, "I got a gun!" The employee backed off. Another employee attempted to stop the man, but he threatened again to shoot if stopped, according to the police report. After receiving the call from Sears, Lincoln Park dispatch received a 911 call from a resident in the 2100 block of White Street, stating that a man was seen running through backyards. Police and the K-9 unit were dispatched to search for the man. A Lincoln Park sergeant and Laser, a dog from the K-9 unit, entered the backyard of a home in the 2100 block of Garfield Street. Laser alerted his handler that the suspect was on the premises, near a garage. The sergeant checked and saw the man underneath a bush. The man was arrested and charged. Police said he admitted to going to Sears with the intention of stealing, so he could get some "fast cash." He said he never had a gun and had only wanted to scare Sears' security. All stolen items were returned to Sears. By Salina Ali
