Campaign signs
Is that restriction still in place? I saw a sign yesterday on Southfield by Lafayette that is 4ft by 8ft. I won't mention any names.

Re: Campaign signs
I seen those same signs, and I dont know about the restrictions, but do think the least that individual can do is purchase some new signs instead of adding to the blight of this city with those signs, they are pretty ratty looking, just my two cents for whatever its worth |

Re: Campaign signs
The campaign signs sizes, etc. was the ONLY campaign promise that Councilman Vaslo kept. The ordiance and more info on that is in his Ask Forum.

Re: Campaign signs
I'm told that that ordinance is no longer being enforced in Lincoln Park because of other Michigan communities with similiar laws being sued by the ACLU. |

Re: Campaign signs
The incumbants would be hard pressed to ignore the ordinance. They are the ones who passed it. ACLU or not, our elected officials felt it was a good ordinance. The test will come on LP Days. Each election year the fenceline on the south end of the park is lined with political signs. Worse yet, are some of the homeowners on the north side of the park will allow a Large Politcal Sign be erected in their front yard. Will any of the six incumbants be reckless enough to have a large sign erected on residential property?

Re: Campaign signs
The sign ordinance is lame. It really didn't change much. Allowing sheets of postered plywood and a dozen smaller signs to be plastered on vacant lots along main streets does nothing but remind me what the incumbants havn't solved since the last election.

Re: Campaign signs
If nothing else, it limited the size of a size on residential property. In past years, the parking strip on the southern end of Youth Center Park was an embarrassment during election years. Then during the 2003 election, a couple of candidates decided to erect huge signs on the front lawns of some homeowners on Gregory. When questioned about this blight the politicians would moan it was their right to erect such a sign. Recent court rulings may have killed the ordinance we do have in place in LP, but let's hope our politicians still abide by it. They voted for it, so they must have agreed with it. If they do erect large signs around the park on LP Days, they will demonstrate their arrogance. |

Re: Campaign signs
I'm not positive, but I think the ACLU case was in Ferndale last summer. From what I remember, the city backed down from the ACLU's threat of a suit, so it never went to court. I could be wrong, but that is what I remember. |

Re: Campaign signs
Ed Zelenak is not about to go into court to fight for the LP Ordinance on lawn signs. The ACLU believes sign ordinances are unconstitutional. I do not see Ed taking on the ACLU in court. http://www.detnews.com/2004/metro/0...etro-277193.htm Locations where campaign sign laws have been challenged Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of municipalities around the county have laws that regulate political signs. In recent months, those laws have been challenged in at least eight states. California After the ACLU threatened a lawsuit, the Glendale, Calif., City Council voted unanimously last month to suspend an ordinance that limits residents to one political sign per property. Connecticut The town of Westport agreed to amend its sign ordinance, which allowed campaign signs 60 days before the election, after being contacted by the ACLU. Michigan A federal judge ordered the city of Grosse Pointe Woods on Friday to stop enforcing its ban on putting up campaign signs 30 days before the election. The ACLU sent letters to several municipal governments warning them that sign ordinances were unconstitutional. A Ferndale man was ticketed for posting signs for more than one candidate, said Elsa Shartsis, of the Oakland County ACLU. Ferndale City Manager Tom Barwin said the city would consider changing its ordinance. Ohio The ACLU of Ohio sent letters to officials in Fairlawn and Kent, both near Akron, asking them not to enforce their sign ordinances. Fairlawn bars signs until 45 days before election day, Kent until 30 days before the election. Pennsylvania The boroughs of Bellefonte and East Stroudsburg agreed not to enforce their political sign ordinances, although East Stroudsburg only agreed after being sued by the ACLU. In Lancaster County, the Lancaster Inter-Municipal Committee is reviewing the ordinance that covers 12 local governments; two local municipalities, Lancaster Township and East Petersburg Borough, said they would not enforce the law. UTAH The ACLU filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the city of Draper after city workers pulled up dozens of signs promoting a candidate for state school board. The city prohibits signs until 30 days before the election. Virginia A new law protects the rights of citizens to post campaign signs on their lawns. Last month, the state ACLU sent letters to all 323 local governments in the state reminding them of the law. Wisconsin In July, a federal judge struck down a City of Pewaukee ordinance that limited signs to 45 days before the election. The state Department of Transportation has stopped enforcing a state code that limits signs along highways |

Found two Michigan Cases so far: Grosse Pointe Woods http://www.detnews.com/2004/metro/0...etro-277193.htm http://www.firstamendmentcenter.org/news.aspx?id=14059 and Troy: http://www.firstamendmentcenter.org/news.aspx?id=14215 http://www.firstamendmentcenter.org...opic=yard_signs

Here is the case precedent: http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/scrip...00&invol=u10373 My question is: Ordinances similar to ours were challeged and overturned as late as Oct 2004. Why would our City Attorney allow our M&C to pass an ordiance that has been overturned? I would think that the least he could have done was warned M&C that this ordinance may be sterile. |

Well yes, but couldn't any ordinance be challenged and overturned? But if that is true, then why did our city attorney not take the same approach with the strip club. He warned them against passing an ordinance against it. He basically told them not to do it. One way or another, he has not been consistant. |

Re: Campaign signs
ACLU argues freedom of speech . The size of a sign denotes volume . there are laws against being to loud. There are laws against blocking the view of drivers to protect pedestrians and property, The ACLU must be for Allowing Victims to shout out in pain as they are loaded into an ambulance. Let them put up their threats to childrens safety in my neighborhood . I won't vote for them. |

Re: Campaign signs
The Vaslo sign ordinance was never an effort to clean up our city, it was a simple ploy to get rid of his competitions large signs!. He was after Higgins and Rutherford because they used a massive amount of 4x8 signs! ----- MORE POWER TO THEM! |

Re: Campaign signs
So you favor signs of any sizes, Mr. Murphy? You agree that the current ordinance is unnecessary? |
