Magina Books in the news
http://www.freep.com/news/cfp/3/vmagina22v_20050922.htm NEW CHAPTER: Bookseller bouncing back Lincoln Park shop reopens 9 months after a stolen truck smashed its front September 22, 2005 BY JOEL THURTELL FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER Magina Books is back. The Lincoln Park used and rare books shop was clobbered in January when the driver of a stolen truck, speeding at over 100 m.p.h. while being chased by Wyandotte cops, ran off Fort Street in Lincoln Park and demolished the front part of Stephan Magina's store. Nine months and more than $100,000 in repairs later, Magina Books is holding its grand reopening sale today through Saturday. The store, at 2311 Fort, is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Magina Books has been in business since 1948, when Magina's father started selling books in the same building where he and his wife lived for the first years of their business. The entire front half of the building had to be replaced after a 19-year-old Detroiter in a stolen 2005 Dodge Ram pickup decided the easy way out of a confrontation with Wyandotte police was to hit the gas. The chase that began in Wyandotte crossed into Lincoln Park. The driver of the pickup missed the curve at Champaign and Fort, clipped a car, bounced off a cell phone store and plowed into the southwest corner of Magina Books about 4:15 a.m. Jan. 13. That his building had been hit by a car didn't surprise Magina when his security company called him early that morning. The bookstore had been hit by errant motorists before. That a speeding pickup could knock out the entire front of the building was a shock. "He caught a column at the corner that supports the upstairs area, and because he knocked out a column at a crucial point in the building, he caused major damage," Magina said. "The front half of the building had to be rebuilt," said Magina. "There were major structural repairs. They had to replace two I-beams and part of the roof. I had to have a new stairway, new windows and a new floor." The damage was covered by insurance, but Magina is still waiting to find out whether he'll be compensated for the income he lost while construction went on. Magina stocks general interest books, with a specialty in books on history, military matters and transportation. The sale will have used books marked down 30% and 20% off new books. "Although it was stressful, it's kind of turned out for the best," said Magina. "I have some improvements, I'm very optimistic and I have a better store than before."
