Hurricane Katrina - Devastation
I cannot believe the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina. http://www.shreveporttimes.com/apps...0/NEWS/50830010 http://www.shreveporttimes.com/apps...0/NEWS/50830011 http://www.christiantoday.com/news/...edented/342.htm Photos: http://www.shreveporttimes.com/apps...r=829003&Ref=PH http://www.shreveporttimes.com/apps...r=830001&Ref=PH http://www.shreveporttimes.com/apps...r=830003&Ref=PH http://informationweek.com/story/sh...cleID=170101420 Homes with water at roof line. I feel so bad for the people...they lost family; homes; cars; businesses... I was watching the news this morning and one newscaster said that because of the water levels, Louisiana burys their dead above ground.....now those people are floating around. This is so sad....I wish the best for them all. It will be a long time before the damage is repaired and it sounds like in some areas, the water is NOT receeding but actually getting higher!

This is devastating. I read a story yesterday that said that since Louisianna is below sea level it could become like the lost city of Atlantis.

I love the city of New Orleans, I was hoping to make it back there in the spring but don't know if it would be a good idea. They have alot of work ahead of them now.

Florida got some weather from it but it hit nearly head on I think in Louisiana. The rain and winds we seen yesterday and possible today were was stemmed from it. |

Re: Hurricane Katrina - Devastation
Does anyone think they even should rebuild New Orleans? It was a French colony back in the early 1700's. By todays' standards, America governments wouldn't allow that kind of engineering to go on. Go try to pull a permit to build a house in/on a swamp, let alone a freakin' city! I strongly believe they should leave the city to "die" and move on! Letting a major city exist 20 to 30 feet below sea level in"huricane" alley by the ocean and the Mississippi River to boot is something short of ! No amount of technology will ever be 100 percent foolproof unless they totally change the way of life down there.(Think of floationg houses when the water level rises and adjustable/interchangable infrastructure.) |

I didn't hear about this but did the underwater dam thingie get destroyed too? Apparantly there is a dam that starts underwater to protech the lower state because it is below sea level. |

Re: Hurricane Katrina - Devastation
That's one of the things I was talking about at work today. We have a unique opportunity in New Orleans. Most cities just evolve over the years, decades and centuries. New Orleans is in a positiion where it can just complete the devestation, wipe the city from existence. Clean out all the old infrastructure, including underground utilties, etc. Then, from scratch, plan the city out, and use the latest technologies to build the city again, and make it a modern city. Oh, and move it to higher ground. A "New New Orleans" (like New New York, in Futurama). But, nahh, it'll never happen due to:
Such a shame to blow a unique opportunity. |

I guess they are having a massive amount of refugees relocating to other parts of the country from the hurricane. I think it's time the administration kick all the illegal aliens back to Mexico and let Vicente Fox deal with the mess! |

Re: Hurricane Katrina - Devastation
BTW: Has anyone ever rode into New Orleans on I-10 coming from the west? It is the wierdest....driving along over the swamps and the many bridges only to get to the greater New Orleans and to be able to see the drop in the ground from the high-way! |

Re: Hurricane Katrina - Devastation
New Orleans should not be rebuilt, although I have never been there, I did plan a trip a few years back but was never able to go due to other circumstances. While I'm sure it was a beautiful city, it should be left as is. One idea I was thinking of was to make it the Venice of the U.S., build up from what is left over. Just a thought... The looting that is going on right now in New Orleans, it's incredible. Our society has reduced itself to that of a third world country. Those that are just terrorizing people should be SHOT onsight. Declare MARSHALL LAW and give plenty of warnings, after that, OPEN SEASON. :: |

Re: Hurricane Katrina - Devastation
I hope everyone takes heed. Remember the big power outages last year? If the outage would have lasted a few more days or weeks, the chaos you see in LA, MS and AL would have broken out here. Even if you prepare with food and water and you have your home, you better be prepared to protect all that and your family. There are many people out there who are evil now, without a manmade or natural disaster, and only the order of society keeps it mostly in check. But they are out there and when the order of society breaks down, well.... All I am saying is that it is something everyone should think about. If you are planning on relying on the LP Police, Wayne County Sheriff, Michigan State Police, or the National Guard to protect you and your family throughout the duration of the disaster, then good luck; you'll need it. So stock up on all the food, water, gasoline for your generator, etc. But remember, if law and order breaks down, people will be coming for your stuff before too long.
