Cheap Eats
I just spotted this article in the Free Press where they mention Lincoln Park - Detroit Shrimp & Fish - on Fort Street near Outer Drive. http://www.freep.com/features/food/...6e_20050816.htm CHEAP EATS: Fried shrimp, done so well August 16, 2005 BY MATT HELMS FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER THE VIBE: I try to limit the amount of fried food I eat. But here in one of the fattest cities in the nation, it can be so difficult to avoid, because places like Detroit Shrimp & Fish do fried food so well. Detroit Shrimp & Fish 20030 James Couzens Detroit 313-864-8161 I checked out the new spot on James Couzens, the service drive to the Lodge Freeway just south of 8 Mile. This one's been open since February, but other Detroit Shrimp & Fish locations are on East Jefferson near Belle Isle, at Southfield and 13 Mile roads in Southfield and on Fort Street in Lincoln Park. The location might prove awkward, being on the one-way northbound service drive, but the place is spanking-new clean, the folks behind the counter are eager to impress and the food ... well, it's dynamite. THE CHOW: The signature shrimp is delicious, and the fish is equally good. On my two visits I went above the Cheap Eats price limit of $12 per person to get a good feel for the place. But you don't have to. The first meal was a big platter of six juicy jumbo shrimp and two generous filets of orange roughy ($14.49), with French fries, coleslaw and a soda. I left overly stuffed, in a fried-food happy daze. On the second visit a companion and I each ordered a quarter-pound shrimp dinner ($8.98) with fries, slaw and a beverage. We wanted to try the catfish, so we split a half-pound order ($6.13). Oy. Can you say leftovers? Folks, it's food like this that gets me in trouble: Hot, tasty and in generous portions, I could stuff myself silly -- a disaster for my cholesterol count. Fortunately there are smaller sizes, ranging from $4.98 for a quarter pound of shrimp only (about six or seven plump shrimp) to $8.98 for a quarter pound of shrimp with fries, coleslaw and a drink. At the high end, a slab of ribs costs $16.49, or $17.49 in a dinner combo. A half slab is $9.49, or $10.49 for the full dinner. Meanwhile, because the northwest Detroit location is trying to lure new customers, it's running a lunch special with a choice of ocean perch, whiting or catfish nuggets or a sandwich of your choice plus fries and a soda for $2.99 -- a real bargain in my book. That's especially so when you consider that Chuck Hammons, assistant manager at the northwest Detroit location, tells me the batters, seasonings and sauces are all homemade. So are the desserts, including caramel apple pie, banana pudding, cheesecake, pineapple upside-down cake, peach cobbler and fudge brownies. Good for the taste buds. Bad for the waistline. THE TAB: The first meal was $15.36 with tax; the second meal, which fed two with leftovers, was $26.17. DETAILS: Hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday-Thursday; 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. Friday; noon to 2 a.m. Saturday and noon to 9 Sunday. Parking can be a challenge.
