Police Protection
I am fed up with people claiming we don't have enough police coverage on the street.I feel bad residents get their cars stolen. To blame it on the number of officers on the street and to hint that there was no supervisor out there moving them along because of the ERI or more crime is happening because of it Is not right . Many of the complaints come from residents that have lived here 10 years or less. 12 years ago you didn't walk the streets without encountering a crack-head They don't know about the crack houses and gang activity we had. The police department handles the crimes in order of severity. A suicide or stabbing or injury accident will get priority if you live in or near Wyandotte you will have a better chance your car will be stolen . Car thefts are up and growing in that city along with break-ins and assaults. 10-15 years ago I never saw any more police on the street and the same crimes were being committed . I walked to Southfield with a gun in my pocket . Addicts ,gang members . and wannabees were out on the streets the Lincoln Park Police did their job . I walk to Southfield for a pack of cigarettes tonight the gun stays home. The crack houses are gone . Ive seen more police presence in the last 5 years than I did the first 20,plus the CPW.

Re: Police Protection
Mind i think our police officers do a Awesome job when i have had to call them they have always been there quick and always been very helpful and concerned. I have noticed a increase in crime in my area, i live in the north end , i couldnt tell you why there is a increase in crime maybe because unemployment is up,im not sure of the reasons but our police officers do deserve a big thank you. |

Re: Police Protection
Donnabird I can't agree more . I live near Raupp school and there has been many incidents I have witnessed the Officers reacting efficiently and respective of all parties involved . They are always courteous and helpful. Something happened on Cicotte a few weeks ago .there were 5-6 cars on 2 streets . We don't hear complaints about them or the Fire Department almost every week like we do about the DPS I probably won't vote for the road millage ,but if they had one for a few more officers i'd vote yes |

Re: Police Protection
The only time it may take officers longer to respond is if there is a major traffic accident, say on I-75. I believe there are only 4 or 5 cars on patrol on midnights so when they get tied up, response time can be slowed a bit. |

Re: Police Protection
There is a difference between available police to take a property report and responding to a crime in progress. I do not know all the facts to comment on the stolen car incident the woman at the podium was talking about. But I do believe crime is on the rise in LP. LP has always had a higher crime rate than most of our Downriver neighbors. |

Any city that borders a large metropolitan city has more crime, by virtue of its location, than those which are more insulated. Cities that have major freeways running through them also have more crime. LP, Allen Park, Melvindale, for instance have more crime than Wyandotte or Riverview. Cities that border large cities also have much higher insurance rates than the insulated cities. |

The Flash - Isn't this because "everyone has to cut through LP to get anywhere?" (Mr. Magoo...Please don't jump all over this. I don't mean everyone exactly--just a generalized statement. That's all.) |

Re: Police Protection
I have been living in Lincoln Park since the early 50s. LP has always had a higher crime rate. At least property crimes, not violent crimes. I have been telling you people for months that crime is on the increase in Lincoln Park. You have ignored me and told me to stop knocking LP. The little gal at the podium last night was a resident of LP. The gentleman at the podium last night was a resident of LP. Both were giving examples of increased crime in LP. I rest my case

Re: Police Protection
There was an article in the NH recently where a 15year was busted old in W yandotte was selling drugs from his mothers house an was busted by the Wyandotte police Groups of teenagers are breaking into homes in Wyandotte My mother-in-law lives north of Grove and fort and had her house and the homes of neighbors broken into by groups of 4- 6 kids breaking into homes a Wyandotte police officer was assaulted returning home from shopping in broad daylight. The problem is in every city Young people at home alone no parents to supervise and single parents afraid of their kids Your wrong Magoo crime all over .not just Lincoln Park. It is not the result of the ERI as they tried to suggest at Monday nights meeting. It is apparent people will go to any lenght to prove hiring Duchane and the ERI was a bad idea and bash a fine police Department Lasts weeks primary results proved I am Right . the voters see right through the games that are being played in Lincoln Park politics. I want the 5TH and 6th position on the Council filled by someone who can work with the those that were the top four on the primary list. IMHO |

Re: Police Protection
They claim there are just as many officers on the street as before the ERI. How about the Detective Bureau? How about the Youth Bureau? Crime is a social problem, not easily solved by officers reacting the the problem. What has LP done to be more proactive to prevent crime? Nothing. Mr Kandes wants to tear down buildings, Mr Murphy wants to keep to buildings from going up. Nobody on the council (except for Councilman Mario DiSanto) has ever addressed the issue of crime in Lincoln Park. |

Re: Police Protection
The crime is a problem for all of the citizens. The business owners too must react. We have a neighborhood watch on our block and it has proven to be very effective with: 1. getting to know who lives at a particular residence 2. knowing which children and young adults live on my block 3. knowing what vehicles should be in someones driveway 4. and just getting to know all my neighbors and knowing that when I'm not home I just let my block captain and neighbors know, and they keep an eye on things for me. Like getting the mail and watering the flowers and lawn to make it look like someone is home. We even share timers for our lights with each other so that we all share the expense of buyong timmers. I suggest that eveyone call the community policing department and notify the officer that you would like to have a neighborhood watch started on your block. We met at the block captains house and the police officer came out and had a bag full of information regarding lighting, door locks, window locks and general information about shopping for the ladies with there purses, holiday tips and otherwise just plain old common sense ideas to help keep you and your loved ones safe. With all the "PROBLEMS" that everyone says they are having I suggest that they get involved and talk to your neighbors and start one on your block. It's the best thing on our block and everyone knows everybody now. I beleive the number to the Community Policing Dept. is (313) 381-3216. I called the police station and they said the name of the officer in charge is Pat Calter. He is very active in the community and I spoke with him at the last blood drive and he said that he is not in the community policing office full time he can only do so much. That he still is a road patrol officer and does not have the time to respond right away but that he will call a.s.a.p. I think that they need this position to be full time and recall that in the past it had not 1, but 2 full time officers. Now they can't even staff it with 1 full time officer. If you don't get a timely response keep calling and let the cheif know that you want this for your block. I'TS AN ASSET TO MY BLOCK AND NEIGHBORHOOD, LET ALONE THE CITY. Magoo, did you have one on your block when you lived in the city? Was it effective? if yes why/why not? Does anyone else have one on their block? |

Re: Police Protection
What community policing department? They went from two full time officers to one full time. Now they are at one part-time officer and are talking about eliminating that. There is a good possibility there will be no community policing department by Christmas. When is the last time there was a Neighborhood Watch Meeting for the Block Captains? They need the information supplied via these meeting in order to disciminate it among the neighbors on their block. These meetings used to be once a month? Have they had any in the last year?

Re: Police Protection
I'm not sure if this has ever been discussed here on this forum, but why doesn't the crime section of the NH list all the crime happening in Lincoln Park. I am aware of things happening around me but never read or hear about it publically. I feel I have the right to know whats going on in my neighborhood so I can be prepared for any trends in crime that may be happening. Jujitso, I noticed you posted that there are only 4 or 5 patrol cars out at night. How many are on patrol during the day? You list your profession as law enforcement on your profile, can you enlightened me as to the amount of patrols a city of our size should be? I would be interested in your opinion as I do not have any law enforcement back ground or knowledge. If it were up to me since we border a major metro city, I would fund the police department fully and insure they have all the equipment they need. I'm thankful for what protection we do have. I feel somewhat safe living in Lincoln Park. |

Re: Police Protection
I was a Police Officer in Beverly Hills, California. Worked a Felony Team for 5 years looking for burglars and car thiefs and we had 100+ police officers in a city the size of Lincoln Park. Our average response time to ALL calls was less than 3 minutes. We always had at least 10 cars on patrol. We still had cars stolen, in fact the pros would drop off the shells of the cars they stripped back in the city once in a while, kind of a flaunting jesture to us. We still had a fair amount of burglaries, car thefts and bank robberies, even with all of that patrol activity and quick response time.

Fact of the matter is, we are not the town of Perfect that is portrayed in the Walgreen's commercials. No matter where you go, there's crime. |

Lets lay the cards on the table and be perfectly honest. It is embarrassing and makes our town look bad when all that info is published. I am not saying it shouldn't be published, but I am sure that is City Halls rationale. Ever read the Monroe Evening News? They publish every single crime (DUI to Murder) for the whole county. They even publish a map that shows the location for each action. Rubberarm used to keep a map like this for LP, but I havent seen it lately. |

With Community Policing being cut back and no Block Captain Meetings for Neighborhood Watch, neighborhoods are no longer being informed of problems around their neighborhood. With a blackout on crime news with the NH, we now cannot get any information as to what is happening around us. And it is not City Hall's decision. It is the decision of the Chief of Police. |
