Re: Is it illegal to put unstamped documentation in a mailbox?
Here Is the Law: 1.3 Use for Mail Except under 2.11, the receptacles described in 1.1 may be used only for matter bearing postage. Other than as permitted by 2.10 or 2.11, no part of a mail receptacle may be used to deliver any matter not bearing postage, including items or matter placed upon, supported by, attached to, hung from, or inserted into a mail receptacle. Any mailable matter not bearing postage and found as described above is subject to the same postage as would be paid if it were carried by mail. 2.10 and 2.11 refer to newspapers |

Does this refer to US Postboxes found on the street, or is this your own personal house box? Is there a difference? My mailbox has no markings that say US Mail or anything like that. |

I don't see why the mailbox on your house should fall underneath the post office's jurasdiction. To me, you buy a mailbox at a store, hang it on your wall, the post office shouldn't be able to tell you or anyone else what to do. |

Right, that is where I was going with my questions. My mailbox is brass, and has large hooks/loops at the bottom for holding a newspaper. So on the rare occasion that paperboy actually puts the paper there, is he breaking the law? It is my box, and I prefer that my paper be put there. |

I can see it if this so called supporter, amazed there is one, , was dumping them in an official mailbox on the corner, but on the house, that shouldn't be any of their concern. |

Yes, it is illegal for newspapers or anything other than U.S. mail to be put into mailboxes whether they are attached to a house or a pole. Newspapers are supposed to be affixed to a doorknob or left on the porch. I don't agree with this practice, but that is the rule. |

Not everyone was a newspaper boy. The average person does NOT know that non-US Mail should not be put in mailboxes. |

Re: Is it illegal to put unstamped documentation in a mailbox?
Hi all Just a quick comment When we passed out our first flyers, we called the main post office and we informed we could in NO WAY use a mailbox for anything that hadn't been properly postaged or delivered by a postal worker. They told us any place that also said NO SOLICITATIONS was off grounds too. They told us a lot of reasons but mostly to protect people who received checks in the mail or anything important that was just frankly no ones business and that there was a reason that they worked for the Federal government, and they were the only ones with access to anyones mailbox. Flyers, advertisements, newspapers and anything else can only be left on a porch, on a handrail, doorknob or anything other than near the actual mailbox. Of course most children are oblivious to this, but when a child starts a paper route, at least with my kids, they are told that unless instructed by the homeowner, the mail box area is off limits. |

I maintain that the average person (immigrant or not, nitwit or not) does NOT know that anything other than US mail is not allowed in mailboxes. If you took a poll, you'd eventually end up agreeing with me. Besides, I've had enough Avon books, campaign stuff, Jehovah Witness and other stuff put into my mailbox. I personally don't care, but I still contend that the average person does not know that. Last edited by jujitsu50 : 10-03-05 at 4:44 pm. Reason: word |

Attempted insult aside, Magoo, Vaslo stated that he informed his "uninformed volunteers" not to use the mailbox. Amazing how you manage to slip in what's suppose to be insulting to me. In addition, not everyone is as "informed" as you claim to be regarding the do's and don'ts of mailboxes. |

Next we will hear Mr Vaslo's uninformed legion of volunteers putting up political signs in areas where they did not obtain permission from the owner. Wait a minute. We already heard about those accusations didn't we? Now they are making sense. |
