Federal Update: Michigan Roads Get a $200 Million Boost
Michigan Roads Get a $200 Million Boost –
A U.S. Congress conference committee agreed last week on a state transportation formula that essentially gives Michigan’s roads and bridges an extra $200 million a year. Under the agreement, Michigan would eventually receive from the federal government 92 cents for every $1 it pays out to the federal government in gas tax money. Currently, Michigan receives 90.5 cents. It is likely that the increased rate of return will be phased in over a period of four years.
Considering that the Bush administration originally wasn’t interested in giving Michigan and other “donor” states any extra money, this is a big win for the MML in partnership with Michigan Infrastructure and Transportation Association (MITA). Also credited with securing the additional funding are U.S. Senator Carl Levin (D-Detroit), U.S. Representative Pete Hoekstra (R-Holland) and U.S. Representative Vern Ehlers (R-Grand Rapids), along with MDOT Director Gloria Jeff and Governor Jennifer Granholm.
