The Middle School 500
Every day when I drop off the kids at the main entrance of the middle school, its a free for all. Cars are darting in and out dropping off kids at the corner, at the curb, in the middle of the driveway, in the opposite direction. It is amazing to me that there are not more fender benders or even worse a child being struck by a car driven by a parent who doesnt have the patience to make it to the curb. |

The afternoon is even worse .Traffic is backed up down Lafayette for 3---4 blocks . What happened to the no left turn sign they used to have when my daudgter went there. some, wacko run it over. Or did some whiny loud mouth parents, complained until they took it down. It was pretty orderly when I used to pick kids up from the Middle School.

Yeah, it was like that when I went there too. I always kept my head up. I remember one time I looked and there were no cars coming then this idiot came speeding at probably 40 mph and almost hit me. |

Re: The Middle School 500
I made the mistake once of driving down Champaign around 3 p.m. on a school day. NEver again. There is way too much traffic on that street at that time. And for only being two lanes in each direction with hundreds of kids being released around the same time ... absolutely an accident waiting to happen. |

These kids act like they own the roads. They just walk in the middle of the road and cross anywhere. I was driving down Lafayette when a kid darted out in front of me. I had to slam on the brakes. What is with these kids? |

Re: The Middle School 500
There is a No Left Turn sign from the middle school to Champaign but in my opinion it is not a legal sign put up by the city, looks like the school made it. Plus, there is always about 30 or so HS students around the middle school at pick up time. I thought they weren't allowed there?

Hey I know, how about having the kids walk to school. I know that is a novel idea, but I am a novel person. Hmmm, students walking to school rather than getting a ride from their parents. I wonder why no one ever thought of that. This is why Mr Kovacs and Mr Knapp are more interested in repaving the school parking lot than improving the education

For those who live near the school, absolutely. But for all the kids who attend the middle and high schools? No way. Those two schools are far away from some parts of town. The traffic on major streets isn't nice enough to have kids from across town walking to and from school each day. |

Kids can walk or take the bus. I can see if it is raining or below 0. Any other time they can walk or take the bus. |

Re: The Middle School 500
If I was a parent, I don't think I'd load my child onto a SMART bus with who knows else riding along with no supervision. I'd just stick to driving him or her if I had the means. |

Re: The Middle School 500
If I was still a parent, I would have my child walk to school. Why do parents insist on over protecting their children nowadays? I saw a story on television the other night about parents who call their kids at college to remind them to get up in the morning, do their homework, study, etc. Then we wonder why 20 year olds never take responsibility for their own actions. They are also lost in the work environment because they need a supervisor to watch them the entire day. |

Re: The Middle School 500
Magoo, did you not read the story the other day about a woman's preteen son getting jumped for his cellphone?! THAT is why parents are "over"protecting their kids. The sick people that everybody has to protect their kids from are in the same age group as your kids, Magoo... now what generation should be allowed to tell another how to be a good parent?

Re: The Middle School 500
I have no problem driving the kids in the morning when I get home from working the midnight shift. I would rather drive them instead of allowing them to walk the distance from emmons. I can think of a recent thread that spoke about how fast and how unsafe people drive on side streets. My youngest does walk to Hoover, its only a few blocks away and guarded well. |

Re: The Middle School 500
Jeez. I live by Emmons as well... and even speedwalking it would probably take me an hour and a half to walk to school, and I don't have that kind of time!!!! I wake up at 7:20 to leave by 7:25 to be there at 7:45. Haha. |
