Is Meet the Candidate Night fixed?
I just read where Primo is claiming Meet the Candidate Night is fixed. He says the questions will be set up to make the candidates look good who are favored by the News Herald. I have also heard that a few of the candidates are thinking about not attending. Gutless is what I say. Elected Officials and Candidates for Elected Office must learn to face the heat. They cannot run away because the questions will be tough. We know Ms Lulko is a better debater than Mr Sochocki, but is that any reason for him to stay home. I am sure that Mr Vaslo will be asked about his decision not to work for a living. Why not stand before the voters and explain why. In my day we liked nothing better than when a candidate got cold feet and did not show up. It was like being handed a free lunch. I think the voter is intelligent enough to know when a question is an ambush question. (We see it week after week at the podium.) But anyone running for office should show they are brave enough to stand there and answer tough questions. I hope Mr Kovacs is asked why he does not comply with city ordinances. I hope they ask all the candidates if they have paid their water bill. What is their highest level of education achieved. I want candidates to answer the questions and not skirt them. I want the Treasurer candidates to explain exactly how they plan on collecting the back taxes. I do not want to hear the same old tire rhetoric about someone is Trustworthy and Loyal and Hardworking and Dedicated, blah, blah, blah,.... Save it for the Boy Scouts. We will find out if the questions are fixed and let's hope everyone show up and there is no epidemic of Bird Flu on Meet the Candidate Night

If the Herald is the only one who can ask questions then it's a waste of time going down there. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

Re: Is Meet the Candidate Night fixed?
From what I am hearing, the News Herald is putting together the questions. I find more ambush questions come from the audience asking questions. Candidates need to get out into the public. They need to be seen. The incumbents have the advantage in that they are seen every Monday night. In addition, the cable channel are always showing the pictures of the coucil. I agree with Magoo in that many people going to the podium do so in order to ambush (Rat Roberts certainly did not just happen to wonder up there last week) These guys have to learn to think on their feet. If they are so embarrassed about being asked a question then perhaps they should reconsider running for public office

Re: Is Meet the Candidate Night fixed?
There will always be some candidates that do better than others, regardless of where the questions come from, that's a given. Some people are more nervous than others. The incumbents should have a slight edge over the non-incumbents just because they're used to speaking publicly. Not allowing questions from the audience can be both good and bad. The good thing is, and this is rather typical more often than not, friends of certain candidates attend these functions to ask ambush type questions. While it almost always happens I don't think it serves the public. The bad thing is if I'm just an average citizen with an honest question, I won't be able to get any answers. The whole theme of this function is to meet the candidate and get answers to my questions. As far as this function being fixed. There are members of the chamber that I have the utmost respect for. They are among st some of the finest people I have had the honor to know. There are a few, that couldn't hold a candle to my dog. Unfortunately, those that I think less of are the ones more involved with certain members of our M/C. Those same people over the past couple of years have been nothing more than mouthpieces for a few on the council. It is no secret that I have a low opinion of the News Herald, another mouthpiece and attack dog for this administration. Their bias and close relationship with those same few members of our council has been consistently reflected within their opinion page and in their articles IMHO. I can disagree with an opinion or an article and still respect the paper. Fair & balanced does not exist with the News Herald IMHO. Did anyone catch the candidate questions the Free Press just published, either Thursday or Friday. Take a look at Vaslo's answer. Paraphrasing, As long as I can flush my toilet and it works, thats providing city services. Giving the guy credit for once, his profile on the city website was well written and well spoken. I don't know if anyone else noticed, but the candidates were told explicitly that their speeches couldn't go over five minutes. If you get a chance, time his and see how many minutes he was allowed to go over. Getting back to his answer in the Free Press, my 16 year old could have done a better job. The news herald is not a representative of the people, their consistent bias has time and time again demonstrated that point. A few members of our council, are more than cozy with this paper and at least one reporter. Considering the News Herald's bias track record of writing articles that consistently favor this administration, and one reporters cozy relationship with one member of the council, IMHO, I have no reason to believe, and I mean no reason, that at least one member of the council will not be provided with the questions in advance. I also have no reason to believe that the questions won't be designed to help the incumbents who have been promoting certain issues in their literature, to continue with their speel. Considering the lack of exposure this event will get, if I were a candidate I would not attend. |

Re: Is Meet the Candidate Night fixed?
the write up about it in the paper says that questions from the audience also will be accepted if time allows. if you don't like the questions that are asked of the candidates, ask your own. and if you don't have any, stay home. the whole event will be videotaped (probably even by the great Jackie Hull!) and aired on cable TV at a later date. |

Thanks Wolverine, I did not see that part. Hope there is time for audience participation and I hope the audience asks relevant questions. |

Re: Is Meet the Candidate Night fixed?
If given the opportunity to ask a question, I would use it to find out if anyone has fresh and do-able ideas for bringing this city to life.I'm sick of mudslinging and would like to get to what really matters, like what influence they feel they can have on this city for positive effects.

There was a thread here on the board somewhere for people to post questions they would like the candidates to answer. Is anyone from going to come with those questions to ask? |

Unless a bunch of candidates do not show up out of fear of being asked some tough questions. Question: "Mr Vaslo, you say you are a 'self-employed real estate agent', how many houses have you sold in the past two years?" I do like the idea of Mr Lemuel being a graduate of Southwester High School in Detroit. That is my alma mater. Good going Mr Lemuel. |

Re: Is Meet the Candidate Night fixed?
I don't believe they take questions geared towards specific candidates anyway. It's more of general questions that are posed to all the candidates. At least that's the way I remember it from the last time. Only one or two may choose to answer it, but I think the questions have to be broad enough so that they aren't directed at one specific person. |

Re: Is Meet the Candidate Night fixed?
I think the questions have to be written down and turned into someone running the event to keep that from happening. |

In fairness I hope they require the audience to write down the question and the Moderator will ask it. |

Many just figured Mr Sochocki does not want to have contact with the voter. Rumor has it that three council candidates are planning on not showing because they are "ill" We will see Tuesday night how bad the "epidemic" is in Lincoln Park. Some call it turning yellow. |

Re: Is Meet the Candidate Night fixed?
With it being recorded and played on the cable up until the election, who knows how many people may have a chance to see it beore going to the polls. Before anyone decides to simply skip the event, I hope they realize the number of perspective voters they will be missing. |
