Robert O'Brien for LP School Board
My friends, I would like to talk to you about Robert O'Brien who is running for School Board in Lincoln Park. As you should know, this man is the incumbent and is asking for you to return him to office. I have only met him once, but he seemed like a nice young man. My senior friends around the city assure me he is a very nice young man. I believe he helps run the Lincoln Park Skating Center on Southfield. His wife Judy help him as well. I have also met his wife and she seems like a special gal to me. As you know, I have been very disappointed with the MEAP scores for the past few years. I have been told that Mr O'Brien is not too happy as well and is doing what he can to correct this problem. Let's give him a chance. I am not familiar with his competition. One is Dawn Johnson who is also currently on the school board. Is it true this young lady paid $100 to be put on the ballot rather than spend time getting signatures from registered Voters. Oh my, what can I say? If she does not have the energy to ask 25 people to sign her petition, does she have the energy to make tough decisions. Another competitor is Ronald Kovacs. This young man has put up political signs that are against city code. Why should anyone vote for a lawbreaker? I have no idea who the fourth person is on the ballot. If you want a good school system, vote for Robert O'Brien. If you want a safe school system, vote for Robert O'Brien. Your children deserve the best. Vote for Robert O'Brien in November. I thank you.

The law allows her to pay $100 rather than collect signatures. I don't think she should be penalized for doing something that is perfectly fine.

The other candidate is Robert Warren Knapp. He currently is on the city's compensation board. |

That wouldn't surprise me. I think the man has enough of his own kids to form their own baseball team. |

Re: Robert O'Brien for LP School Board
Since there are two openings I will give this Mr Knapp a serious look. Ms Johnson and Mr Kovacs would not get my vote if I were registered in Lincoln Park. Ms Johnson didn't even bother to ask 25 people to support her by signing her petition. Mr Kovacs is breaking the law by putting up oversized political signs in residential areas. At this time I am fully behind Mr Robert O'Brien. He is the man we can trust to improve the MEAP scores. |

I agree Mr. Magoo, if this person doesn't have the time to go out and get a few signatures, then how is she going to find time to do a proper job on the board? My kid's education is not worth the chance. |

Re: Robert O'Brien for LP School Board
Mr. O'Brien has been on the school board for years. Mr. O’Brien has been on the School Board longer than any of the "other" candidates for sure. At what point do we in Lincoln Park actually hold people accountable for poor performance? Mr. O'Brien has had his chance to make a difference and, as the MEAP's show, Mr. O'Brien has FAILED. That's with a capital F. Shameful, he should have had the decency to resign after the abysmal performance of the LP school system. I would not vote for Mr. O'Brien under any circumstances. I live and VOTE in LP and will not vote for Mr. O'Brien - ever. Mr. Knapp is a very close friend (as is Mr. O’Brien) of Mayor Brown (if that makes any difference). Mr. Magoo has a nack for pushing some of Mr. Brown's favorite candidates. Nice. That's good. I thank you. |

Mr.Knapp coaches the city league football team. They are the Junior Rails, and he coaches the junior varsity. Is a true asset to Lincoln Park, very respected by parents and kids alike |

I know very little about the school board. None of the current candidates (and incumbants) make me twitter.

Re: Robert O'Brien for LP School Board
I don't think Magoo believes girls should be attending school let alone setting policy, so Johnson is out for him. isn't Kovacs involved with Jr Rails as well? I have seen nothing for Knapp. Seen some signs for O'Brien and Johnson. And of course I have seen the oversized signs that Kovacs put out. |

Re: Robert O'Brien for LP School Board
I've seen a few signs for Knapp, I just started seeing them this week. I'd like to find out a bit more about him, but so far I like the fact that he's involved with school activities and if he has a lot of children then I think he would definately be a credit to the school board because he'd want what was best for schools his children attend. |

Re: Robert O'Brien for LP School Board
The Candidate Profiles for School Board have been published in the News Herald. They can view them on this website. I would like everyone to read through the material closely. I can safely say that Robert O'Brien is the clear choice. In fact the ONLY choice. The two challengers (Mr Knapp and Mr Kovacs) are more concerned with the sports programs than with academics. Obviously, they do not have a firm grip on the problems facing the school system. Both talk about the parking lot at the elementary schools and do not even mention the poor perception of the Middle School. Both the Challengers pointed out the problems with the LP school system, but neither stated how they would correct the problems. Just because someone knows the pipes are leaking doesn't mean they are a plumber and can fix them. Ms Johnson is the other incumbent. She did better than the challengers, but that is because she is on the front lines. Like the challengers, she pointed out problems (albeit she knew what the problems were) but she failed to offer any solutions. Come November, please give one of your two votes for school board to Robert O'Brien. The second vote would be best to enter a write in candidate. |

Re: Robert O'Brien for LP School Board
Well, as usual Magoo your biased opinion about Warren Knapp needs some accuracy !! You say yourself that he does not care about the middle school? Well, guess what, I was at a middle school meeting the other night, and who sat right at the next table? Warren Knapp!!! And guess what else? He was voicing his concerns about how he is tired of the bum rap that ALL LP schools get, especially the Middle School! He himself stated that that is one the reasons he decided to run for the school board, like he says, there are a LOT of good kids, and teachers, in our district, and unfortunately, everyone hears the negativity!! Concerned parents, like Mr. Knapp, wants all of this negativity to stop!! Guess what else? Do you know who the president of the Middle School PTA is, Pauline Knapp, otherwise known as Mrs. Warren Knapp. So before you condemn this fine man, who thinks so much of our kids, and their schooling, get your facts straight! Everyone else (that actually lives in our city) and is able to vote, please remember, a vote for Warren is a vote for your child !!!! |

I WOULD RATHER HAVE SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN RUNNING THAN SOMEONES NAME WRITTEN IN. AT LEAST YOUR GOING TO HAVE SOMEONE WHO IS GOING TO TRY. SAYING THAT, I'M NOT SAYING THAT ANY OF THEM ARE GOOD CANDIDATES OR BAD, BUT THEY HAVE TO WORK AS A BOARD TO GET THINGS DONE WHOEVER GETS ELECTED WON'T BE ABLE TO DO IT BY THEMSELVES. |

Re: Robert O'Brien for LP School Board
I want someone who is interested in raising the level of academics than someone only interested in a winning team and a parking lot. The MEAP scores are terrible. Simply Terrible. At least Mr O'Brien and Ms Johnson acknowledge that. Mr Knap and Mr Kovacs never mentioned the word MEAP. I hope they know what it is. The foundation of a good school system is the education the students receive. What good is an undefeated team if the players getting a scholarship find they are academically ineligible? |

Re: Robert O'Brien for LP School Board
I agree with you, but just because the two challengers didn't mention the MEAP scores doesn't mean that they're not concerned, but there are other concerns as well, like the lack of funds. I feel that all the candidates have valid concerns and that they all need to be addressed |
