Why do churches not pay property tax?
The First Amendment to the United States Constitution starts off with
Quote:
Does the favored tax treatment of churches (no property taxes) constitute such an establishment of religion? If I were to drop by Rocky's Leisure King store, and start worshipping a candle there, and can convince others to worship that candle as well, can Rocky then stop paying property taxes on the grounds that his store could be considered a Church of the Favored Vanilla Scented Candle? [no disrepect intended toward Rocky or his store] Why are churches exempt from paying property taxes? How much income is the city losing from the 14+ churches within the city, being unable to bill property taxes on that land. I remember the disappointment of the council when Lynn Hospital was torn down, and the property purchased by a church (which then did nothing with the property besides erect a temporary sign). |

Re: Why do churches not pay property tax?
That is a good qestion, I am just guessing here churches are non profit i think, what i mean by that is they support their own church with donations from members or at least that is how it worked when i went to church as a child and teenager, in my church we all donated money that went to the upkeep of the church, utilities, field trips and things like that for the kids that attended church, and if we ever had a family that was a member of our church in need we helped them out with food, clothes, and however we could. So i am guessing because there is not a profit being made that is why they dont pay property taxes, and im not real sure if they do or dont, just my thoughts on the subject. |

Re: Why do churches not pay property tax?
I'm non-profit, yet I pay property taxes. Does (Did?) the St. Vincent dePaul organization pay property taxes for their facility in the old K-mart building on Outer Drive? |
