2 Year Terms
Has LP always had elections every two years? Elections are so costly, and the newbies don't seem to get enough experience before they are once again on the campaign trail. Instead of the constant campaigning and political games, maybe they could find it easier to get some work done. It just doesn't sound financially wise to me. That's my opinion.

Re: 2 Year Terms
LP has had elections every two years since becoming a city. Every so often there is talk about four year terms, but such measures are defeated. Soundly defeated. Lincoln Parkers have always been opposed to changing the length of terms. Whether it is financially sound to hold an election every two years is certainly up to debate. But I do not see it changing in my lifetime. I would say it would make sense to change the terms of the City Clerk and Treasurer. To me, those offices should be 4 year terms. But Mayor and Council should remain two years.

Re: 2 Year Terms
I have said it before and I'll say it again, the terms are too short. With some elected officials, they are booted from office before their ordinances and policies are fully taking effect. Elected officials would be held more accountable for their actions if they stayed longer. Wouldn't it be nice to not have to see one councilmember accuse the other of political grandstanding or politicking for votes at a meeting. Maybe some of this would subside with 4 years between elections. And it is a huge cost issue. I read somewhere that Ms. Breeding estimated the cost of an election just under $20,000. It is also a lot of work. Finally, it seems that we cannot have a Memorial Day Parade, a Downriver Cruise, or an LP Days without political ads and politicians handing out some cheap trinket. Wouldn't be nice to go through a few summers without all the campaigning. It is almost like the signs go up right after the election, like the cycle never ends. |

I think AP's about the same Jeyhey. I remember working the election of 2003 and heard the cost was about the same. Also, they have been changing the way some elections are timed in order to try and save costs. Change is not always a bad thing, Magoo. |

Re: 2 Year Terms
While I would agree that two year terms are short, when we elect people like Vaslo to the council, two year terms can seem like a lifetime. Two year terms limit the damage and embarrassment that someone like Vaslo can cause our city IMHO. |

There was a councilman a few years back, I can't remember his name, but he was a total embarassment. He had a badge and used to pull people over for traffic violations. |

Re: 2 Year Terms
Isn't he the same one who used to damage his own property and then file police reports saying people were harassing him? And didn't he once call in a bomb threat to City Hall during a council meeting? I think his last name was Zoltowski, or something like that. I don't remember much about his actual time in office except for he resigned after it was found out what was really going on. |

Re: 2 Year Terms
No one can predict how an elected individual will perform. There are pros and cons to whatever term limits may be in place. The fact is that elections cost big money. The nasty effects of one election barely wears off before another is about to begin. Solutions take time, and as we all know, gov't bodies are slow in procedure. Changing players causes more delay. If you get a bad apple voted in, so what! There are five other sitting Councilpersons. If it goes deeper than just being a "bad apple", that's what a recall is for. I'm not saying I don't see the "pros" of two year term limits. I'm saying that local gov't needs to find other ways to save money besides take services away from the community. TMO |

Re: 2 Year Terms
Many metro Detroit suburbs have 3 and 4 year terms. If LP did the same, it would be a savings for LP. |

Re: 2 Year Terms
do any of the cities have staggered terms, where some councilpeople have been on for four years and some for only two so when they have an election its only for the four year councilmembers? (I hope you understand what I'm trying to say, or was it as clear as mud?) |

Yes, some have staggered terms. I don'trecall which cities do, but I think that's a great method. |

Re: 2 Year Terms
Saving money would not necessarily apply with some of the tax and spend council people we have. If it were up to Kandes & Vaslo, we would be building a new city hall in the middle of our financial crisis. Fortunately, we have enough council members with the good sense not to consider that type of irresponsible spending. I don't know who ordered the study, but every time it was mentioned, Vaslo & Kandes's name were always mentioned as the two behind it. |

Re: 2 Year Terms
Having staggered elections would save nothing. It costs the city the same amount of money no matter how many candidates are on the ballot. It does cost the candidates. They have to raise money every two years. Incumbents have the advantage because they already have their signs stored away. New Candidates have to start from scratch. It is hard enough to get some of these guys out of office without giving them more years between elections. LP School Board has staggered terms for their spots. This year they have two Trustee spots open. It cost the city the same to have an election for these two spots on the ballot as opposed to all the school board positions. |

This Detroit News article already has our Mayor & Council listed as serving 4-year terms! http://www.detnews.com/2005/wayne/0.../B02-314617.htm

Re: 2 Year Terms
Who provided that bogus information to the paper. I think they will be issuing a correction article for Mr DiSanto and a published apology. I may have to start buying the NH again

It was reported in a post here just the other day (by Leslie I believe) that the DDA ordered the study. Vaslo and Kandes had nothing to do with it. |

Breeding was missing too. Anybody on the ballot have ties to the Detroit News. I sent an Email to one of the writers for the county section. Said they need to correct their error. |
