$80 Fine.
There is a new rule effective this school year to prevent high school students from entering middle school grounds to visit teachers or anything else. High school students can not step foot on middle school property. If a high school student needs to pick up their younger siblings or any middle school student, that high school student must wait across the street on Lafayette, not on the middle school side. Any high school students caught in the middle school or on the grounds will recieve a warning and an $80 fine on their second offense. Also a reminder: Anyone visiting or entering the middle school must recieve a pass from the office by going through the back 8th grade doors. No exceptions!

Re: $80 Fine.
That rule probably serves two purposes: 1) To protect the younger students from the older ones 2) To prevent high school students from cutting through the Middle School property on their way to and from school, thereby disrupting classes and impeding parent traffic that's there to pick up their middle school students.

Re: $80 Fine.
When I was in Junior High (now called Middle School) they let us out about 15 minutes earlier than the high school. That was to get us out of there before the high school kids could terrorize us. Does the middle school still get out before the high school?

Re: $80 Fine.
I think they get out after the high school kids. Like I said, I think one of the purposes of this rule is to reduce the number of High School kids cutting through the Middle School parking lot after school. It disrupts the classes and causes a traffic nightmare for the parents picking up their kids. |

Re: $80 Fine.
Seems to me they could avoid a lot of problems by letting the Middle School kids out before the High School kids |

Re: $80 Fine.
The high school gets out 22 minutes before the middle school does, but apparently it's a trend to loiter on the middle school's property to smoke. I don't understand this. In fact, I don't understand a lot of high school kids. I hate driving home after school because there are always some random morons who decide to push each other into the road to be hit by oncoming traffic, and then the dummies who randomly cut across the street without looking both ways. After four years in the high school, I'm finally a little bit bitter. They could solve the problem by slapping handcuffs on the kids. Heh. That'd teach 'em! I haven't really heard too much about this new thing though, Mandie. Has it been on the announcements? Can't hear over my class. |

Re: $80 Fine.
I understand WHY this is a rule BUT.... for instance, in my household, my middle school son must be picked up by his older brother. This WILL not hold up in a court I would think. No one in any government capacity is going to order me or my older son from NOT picking up children/siblings. IF the School Board spent more time on keeping the gangs and such out of our schools than golf outings parents would NOT have to have their children picked up by them or thier older siblings. The school board needs to spend more time on the education and safety within the schools then trying to step on my parental rights or for that matter older sibling rights. Oh wait.. I get it....with the ERI we lost over 22 experienced sworn officers.....what happened to the Juvenile Officer? Is this more of Duchane's and Brown's Get More for Less crap?

Re: $80 Fine.
Maybe you should try talking to whoever's the Principal at the school, Robin? Maybe give your son a slip of paper with your phone number or something if someone gives him trouble. I think that this rule is primarily for the HUGE groups of kids who walk around smoking and whatnot around the middle school. Then again, the middle school always has had its troubles. When I was younger, my mom stopped picking me up first from school and would instead head to the opposite end of the city to pick up the little girl she baby-sat for because she was always afraid she would be late picking the girl up. Mr. Redden was adamant about students not lingering after school. I remember waiting for a half hour in the cold for my mom to pick me up because he didn't want any kids in the building, not even standing in the doorways. It got pretty cold out there waiting a half hour every day after school, and I dreaded it. The Principal's changed since then--hopefully some of the mentality has, too. |

Re: $80 Fine.
They are encouraging high school students to park on the side streets across from the middle school or on Lafayette. I heard about this fine from my little sister. She is in tenth grade and went into the middle school to visit one of her teachers (on teachers request) and had to go to the office to get an office pass. They informed her to tell all her friends to do so or they would be fined and/or suspended. I dont think its that horrible of a rule. Its takes about two minutes to drive a little bit more and park on a side street. There is a front and back door for each grade so it should not be a problem for the student to come out of the front door and walk across the street (there are cross walks that most cars abide by) like they do every day. Its only a little bit more driving. No big deal. I dont think this applies to parking on school grounds to pick up a younger sibling. I think it is addressed more to the high school students standing out in front of the school or in the back of the school waiting for the middle school to get out. The students standing on the sidewalks basically. I think it is a pretty good idea. Your students need to be safe after all and what is a little more walking going to hurt any young kid? It is not that hard to go into the office and recieve a pass if you do need to enter the school or the grounds to pick up a sibling. You just walk right in and ask them for one. They ask you what you are there for and then its done. |

Re: $80 Fine.
There are teachers, patrol cars , the officer assigned to the high school ,out on Champaign and Lafayetee all the time. Trying to herd the students along This has been a problem way back to 1995 before the Middle School was built. Herds of high school students dsrupting traffic. Large groups of smoking .foul mouthed students harassing drivers and being a public nusaince.. Sometimes accompanied by their equally ignorant fouled mouthed Parent picking them up in the Middle of the street. The problem has increased since the Middle School opened. Parents should request a meeting with the 2 principals Dr.Evans and Ms Diener . Reverse the dismissal times Middle School 2:30 High School 2:50 Set up an area near the Middle School Office for the pickup of younger brothers and sisters. The Middle School students have 15 min to vacate the property and the High School students are to be of the property by 3:10 Unless a student participates in an after school program or picking someone up they get suspended 5 days, and fined $30 1st offense . suspended 10 days and fined $80 2nd offense, and fines paid by the parent within 48 Hrs of the offense. How long are we going to blame Duchane and the ERI for things that started long before Duchane was hired and our Alleged leaders were too incompetent to correct. This is totally the responsibility of the Lincoln Park School board . they look out their windows and see it 5 days a week from their offices on Champaign.. We have some real mental midgets running the show.

Re: $80 Fine.
Mental Midgets... You crack me up MINDVTR!! I haven't heard that term in a long time! My answer to your question about how long are we going to blame Duchane and Council for the ERI? In my mind.....I will blame them until a) I see a master plan for this city that encompassed the radical ERI move and outlines where the state of city will be in 5 years, 7 years, 15 and 30 years and the plans are cohesive with the next master plan level; and b) Until they release the REAL ERI numbers so that we can see exactly how much we saved or not and if it's the latter than a recommended plan of action that we the TAXPAYERS will agree to; and c) until they either 1) reduce our taxes to compensate for the less services or 2) loose the high paying jobs that were created when employees left during the ERI and consolidate them with the current LP Employees. |

Re: $80 Fine.
At one time the Junior High school did get out before the High School. This was to get the younger kids out of the way before the high schoolers were let out. And even in the Junior High there was a schedule of the age groups being let out for the day. The 7th grade left first, followed later by the 8th grade and then the 9th grade. This was done to get the younger kids a head start. At one time, School Officials used their heads. They understood it was not good to have the different age groups mingling in large groups of mixed ages. Children love to intimidate, especially young teens

Re: $80 Fine.
My Junior High and High School started and ended at different times, and this worked out for the best. The Junior High started earlier and got out earlier. This kept the High Schoolers away from the Junior High kids and the high schoolers liked being able to sleep in a little later. |

Re: $80 Fine.
In 2003 we elected 3 new people to council to address the prob;ems facing the city . they were supposed to have the answer working with the incumbents . the only person of the 3 that showed the voter they are capable was and their progress was acceptable was Higginsif the primary vote is any indication of how the voters feel. We were handed 2 years of finger pointing and obstruction. A council that has not focused on a united effort to direct the unanimously hired CM and his staff . they have chosen to work hard at solving residents problems ,that are best left to the professionals we pay to operate the city on a daily basis. If we hired A Jack Welch ,Lee Iococca,or Peter Wilmont to manage this city .they would not be able to make significant improvements in 8-9 months Operating the city with a cm is a major change and eventually correct years of neglect.. It will take a minimum of 6 years of constant attention . How the ERI will impact the city Finances Greenspan probably couldn't tell us if he looked at it . It's a progressive investment that changes year to year and day to day. I know for sure much of the money that was paid out was already there for years and large sums are deposited on a monthly basis. The people that chose to purchase years to qualify actually benefited the ERI because they forfieted money they would normally be Entitled to . Kandes and the Police And Fire pension board are attending a conference next week and will come back with new ways of boosting the balance of their fund . If that fund goes broke they will be the ones be held accountable . There are always institutions making offers to get a piece of the cash flow from groups like pension boards and will guarantee a return when the funds come due. The only way we could be in real trouble is if we elect a council that has members that only want to question things that are over and solved , think being redundant is the way to work .and keep a vindictive attitude towards other members of M/C. Pointing fingers .having personal agendas and think we should return to the ways this city was run not accepting change . |
