Lincoln Park Historical Museum updates
Received the LP Historical Society newsletter for September, October and November 2005. Thought I'd share some excerpts from it with everyone: COMING EVENTS October 5, 2005 Ann Smith - Antique clock repair (Downriver business) Ann will talk on antique clocks and more. November 2, 2005 Steve Magina - Books/Antiquarian (Downriver business) Steve will tell us about his early family history and family involvement in books - used and rare. December 11, 2005 LP Historical Museum Open House 1:00 PM - 7:00 P.M Mulled cider and music-refreshments Memorial Tree - Children's Tree. Main Tree to be decorated by The Downriver Geneological Society. Memorial Tree will be in the music area again. You are welcome to bring in an ornament in white, crystal, silver or blue for the tree. Museum will put the name of your loved one on it and it will be on the tree for this year and next year also. They will also have a children's tree. December 31, 2005 Ringing of the Goodell Bell at midnight Museum volunteers were busy in August cleaning and polishing things to open up the large room on the lower level. Caretaker Joseph Griggs has been working to frame in the windows and seal the bottom three feet of the walls preparing them for wainscotting. Letterboxing was a success! One lucky kid won a gift certificate to Greenfield Village for the Letterboxing activity! Historical Society is checking into doing another Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser like the one they had a few years back! The 1950's bicycle that was donated to the historical museum in 2002 has been restored courtesy of Don Van Cleave of Al Petri Bikes! Don and his bike restorer managed to send the bike back in beautiful condition with new tires like the originals! You gotta check it out! Acquisitions A child's china tea set with a nursery rhyme was recently donated to the museum as well as an egg beater, fireman's uniform and an embrodered quilt. Store News Museum is in need of gift items to sell at their small store counter. Much of the stock on hand sold at the Fun Day. Preservation Alliance The pictorial book of Lincoln Park that the Preservation Alliance has been working on for almost a year, is now in the hands of the publishers. The cover is beautiful!! The Preservation Alliance has been instrumental in our Lincoln Park Historical Museum being named an historical site. We are waiting for the State of Michigan to send us the sign. Mens Club Joseph Griggs, museum caretaker, will be starting up a Mens Club for the museum. This group of men will get together to work on the renovation projects at the museum. Joseph plans on starting it next month. Museum hours The museum will no longer be open on Sundays. The historical society board voted to reserve Sundays for Special Activities or Exhibits. (i.e. - they have been extremely short handed on Sundays). Thus, the museum hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 1 pm - 5 pm. And from President Barbara Barron-Wilcox Once upon a time in Lincoln Park . . . there was a grove of woods. That's not unusual, since most of Lincoln Park was forested at one time. This particular wooded area included New York Street, Howard, Riverbank and Fort as boundary streets. There were sidewalks on a couple of these streets, but no self-respecting grade school student would use a sidewalk when a path through the woods would take you to the same destination . . . Hoover School. The mud and puddles of water to stomp in were not the only attractions in this particular woods. There were lots of birds and small mammals. There was also a pool of water about three feet across, but of unknown depth -- turquoise blue in color. In winter, the edges froze, but not the center. Pebbles dropped into the pool sank in the ooze at the bottom of the pool. At certain times of the year, bleached white skeletons of crayfish and frogs that ventured into the clear turquoise water were seen floating. Eventually the remains sank to the bottom, too. The water smelled like rotten eggs. Students were told that the smell came from the sulfur in the water. In later years, there was a driving range on Fort Street between Emmons and New York, and a few old golf balls found their way into the pool. Today there are still some trees, a lot of houses, another school, a church, a large parking lot, and a strip mall. I suspect that the sulfur spring is still there. Any one know where? Barbara |
