Senior Citizens
Senior Citizens A college student at a recent Oregon/OSU football game challenged a senior citizen sitting next to him, saying it was impossible for their generation to understand his. "You grew up in a different world," the student said, loud enough for the whole crowd to hear. "Today we have television, jet planes, space travel, man has walked on the Moon, our spaceships have visited Mars, we even have nuclear energy, electric and hydrogen cars, computers with light-speed processing...And uh..." Taking advantage of a pause in the student's litany, the geezer said, "You're right. We did not have those things when we were young; so we invented them, you little twit! What the heck are you doing for the next generation??"

Hahahahaha!! When I first saw this topic on the sidebar...I saw the words "Senior Citizens" and "Humor". I thought to myself "Oh brother...Magoo is gonna have a coronary". But after reading it, I think he'll be pleased with it.

Re: Senior Citizens
I doubt the present generation could make it to the Moon and back. They have a hard time orbiting the earth. Could the present generation invented the Atomic Bomb or the Nuclear bomb? I doubt it. Took a team of scientists several years. They had to start from scratch on only a theory. The present generation can only invent computer games. Many are dead from the neck up.

Re: Senior Citizens
Yeah...the invention of the atomic bomb was a greater achievment than the invention of computer simulation programs that help train professionals for dangerous jobs without having to actually put them in danger. |

But view it from all angles: What did the atomic bomb do? It led to the proliferation of nuclear arms across the globe. There are estimated to be over 200 nuclear warheads in the world...each with enough destructive power to obliterate a 15-mile radius and cause 3rd degree burns on victims for another 30 or so miles. Nuclear fallout can travel thousands of miles if weather conditions are proper. The cancer-causing carcinogens do not only poison those who were unfortunate to be within a few hundred miles of its fallout...it also poisons unborn children, wildlife, and the enviornment. In my opinion, all wars should be fought with soldiers and mechanized technology. They should not be faught with NBC (Nuclear/Biological/Chemical) weaponry. While very unfortunate, I would much rather see a few million dead combatants killed by the hands of enemy combatants than to risk the potential of having the entire world poisoned by a few nuke-crazy nations with nervous fingers on the trigger. This may be another discussion, but do you have any idea how antiquated and broken down Russia's nuclear devices are? Some scientists and engineers believe that Russia's equipment is in such need of repair that they actually run a small risk of accidentally firing a warhead. I don't care how small the risk is, it's not something I feel comfortable with. More food for thought...out of the roughly 200 nuclear warheads in the world, over 150 of them are owned between Russia and the US. That might make some feel "safe"...knowing that we are one of the two nations that own a majority of the warheads. But remember: It only takes one well placed warhead to poison and destroy an entire nation. |

Re: Senior Citizens
Here is the way I look at the Atomic Bomb and going to the Moon. When I was a kid, the teachers always stressed the technology to make "The Bomb" was years and years ahead of it's time. It was the determination of the scientists that made it possible. Same with the Moon. Scientists thought about landing on the moon sometime by the late 70s to early 80s. Kennedy makes a speech saying we will land on the moon by the end of the 60s. He did not ask anyone. He made the speech then told the scientists to make it happen. They did. We landed on the moon in July of 1969. Had it not been for the Space Program, I doubt the computers of today would be anywhere near as advanced as they are. |

Nothing happens in a vaccuum. It's all inter-connected. (Ever see that old TV show called Connections?) And in a fantasy world, I would love to live Nuclear/Biological/Chemical weapons free. But it's too late now and has been too late since the first dead carcuses were lofted over an enemy's wall. |

Yes, Magoo, the present generation could develop an Atomic or Nuclear Bomb, or go to the moon, if none of these had ever happened. Remember, your generation was one of the greatest, but it also was one that was at the right place at the right time. It was a time period in which technology had advanced to the point that those things were possible. In addition to that, there was an enormous need and push for Nukes/Moon walk and there was great economic prosperty. Einstien used to say that all great scientist stand on the shoulders of the scientist before him. What he meant was that each generations scientist's benifit from those that came before him (or her). From DaVinci to the Currey's to Ben Franklin to Einstien to Robert Oppenhiemer, they all had a hand in developing the atomic bomb. You could make the same arguement about the space program, crediting the earliest astronomers to the Wright brothers. True that there is not a lot left in terms of the mechanical acheivements for our generation, but I think you will find that in the last 25 years or so, more achievements have been made in the health related fields like...the artificial heart, kidney dialysis, cancer treatments, viagra () and many yet to come. |
