From the Superintendent:

This was the letter from Mr.Kite in this month's Lincoln Park Public Schools paper:

Quote:
It's hard to believe, but it's time to plan for a return to the classroom

Another year, the same old comments: Summer vacation is just about over and a new school year is almost here.
I hope that everyone enjoyed a safe, fun and relaxing summer vacation, and I'd like to be among the first to welcome you back for another year.
Although I also say this every year, too, I really think this year promises to be as exciting and challenging as any we've had in recent memory.
Of course, once again we're starting the year with a balanced budget.
And despite the past state funding cuts, we begin this year with our academic programs intact.
But one thing does stand out from the comments I seem to always make this time of year: The incredible success of our all-day Kindergarten program.
How successful?
Well, in three short years, we've gone from a pilot program to every elementary school offering a program this fall!
You can read more about out all-day Kindergarten program on the front page, but if you remember, we initially piloted the program at Carr and then expanded it to Foote and Keppen two years ago.
Then, last year we added Mixter.
And now this fall we're doubling the program -- to include all eight elementary schools.
That's a success story!
Of course, we already knew that an all-day program offers a great start to a child's education, but two years ago we were breaking new ground with parents whose own Kindergarten experiences of a generation ago were limited to either a morning or an afternoon session.
As it turned out, though, we underestimated out parents' ability to think beyond their own experiences -- and demand something more for their children.
And we responded.
Last year in this column I wrote: "There is a waiting list and we hope to further expand this program in future years."
Little did I know that "future years" would be just 12 months ago.
I want to thank all the central office staff and individual school principals and their staffs for working so hard to make this a reality.
It's not easy to make this kind of major revision to our school day -- and our school buildings-- but I'm delighted and gratified that we were able to do so.

In other news, I can't repeat it often enough: All of our schools remain accredited by the North Central Association.
And we have the proof: The NCA recently pressented LPHS with a certificate congratulating us on 50 years of continuous accreditation!
Needless to say, this is an incredible accomplishment -- one that I don't think many school districts can boast.
Getting accredited, as many of you know, is a lengthy, ardous process that really never ends.
Although a lot of hard work goes into meeting the standards established by the NCA, just as much effort goes into maintaining those standards.
As a result, my hat is off to our building principals and staff for not only bringing our schools up to NCA standards, but keeping them there-- for 50 years!
As part of our on-going drive for educational excellence, I'm also proud to report that all our teachers have maintained the "Highly Qualified" status required under the "No Child Left Behind" act.

I would be remiss if I didn't thank the people of Lincoln Park for the recent passage of our sinking fund proposal.
As was promised, the Board of Educaion has reduced the bond mileage rate to 5 mills -- and we'll begin work soon on projects being paid for by the sinking fund.

As always no school year would be successful without parents, teachers, and students working together.
So parents, remember to get involved in your child's school life. Get to know your child's teachers and their expectations. Read to your children and help them with their homework.
Establish a quiet time and designate for a place for study (For more ways to be involved, read the Parents- District compact on Page 10).
So now that I've had a chance to bring you up to date, let me extend to all of you: "Best wishes for another successful school year!"

-Randy Kite
