Road Capping
Have been busy lately, so perhaps someone could fill me in When are all of these roads that were slated for capping going to be done? Why does such work as this and our sidewalks always start late every year? |

Hey Cherub, welcome back buddy. The answer is procrastination.

Re: Road Capping
You have been away for a long time. This year the city decided to cap most of the roads rather than completely redo them. However, they grossly underestimated the cost. Bids came in twice as high as they had budgeted for the work. The specs had to be redone, which took a month or two. It was only a week ago that they finally awarded the contract. But it was only for the intersections and not for the street improvements. Looks like none of the streets will be repaired this year, only intersections. I don't think Fort Park will survive another winter.

Good Question ... I have been wondering the same thing. I heard it had something to do with bids for the job. |

Re: Road Capping
back Cherub!!! The projects were delayed due to ungodly high estimates for repair. Origionally we were told that there would be "NO PROBLEM" using an asphalt cap to repair these roads, but the reports came back telling us that the roads were so bad that even if we wanted to use the cap, we would HAVE TO REPLACE the base of the road. If this is true, I think we need to do the job right and follow the plan we already had in place! People getting their roads done in the future deserve the same good quality of roads that residents received in the past! We all pay taxes, and nobody should be short changed so we can squeeze in a few more blocks of road. The little bit of extra work we get done will only be a drop in the ocean! |

Re: Road Capping
the bottom line is every voting member up there dropped the ball, and when a plan was already in place they chose to change it,and for that we have no roads, but hey they still got our tax dollars for this years roads though didnt they. |

Let's not blame the contractors bidding on the job for this fiasco. The problem is not the ungodly high estimates from the contractors. The problem is the job was grossly underestimated by the City Engineer. The contractors did not put the bid specs together. Remember, each and every bid was way over the city engineer's estimate. In fact, the lowest bid was TWICE over his estimate. If the bid specs were good, the city would have went out for bids the next week, but instead they waited weeks and then months before going out for another bid. Originally the City Council announced we would have more roads replaced this year than ever before. Now we will have fewer roads replaced than ever before. If I sound mad, then you are reading correctly. Our roads are falling apart and now we will be a year behind. We couldn't keep up as it was and now we are a year behind. I think the taxpayers are owed a refund on the millage they paid this year for the roads. The contractors are not to blame for this. The blame lies directly with the City Engineer, the City Manager, the Mayor and the full Council. |

Re: Road Capping
It is frustrating, but remember Murphy only gets 1/7th of the blame. At least he has the guts to come on a explain himself. The one thing that I am happy for is that Tom made it sound like the city will now consider using concrete instead of Asphalt, since the price is now closer. I have said from the start that if they weren't going to fix the roads the right way (a way that will last), then don't do them at all. I want to see the construction done properly, not a band-aid quick fix. |

These politicians are only concerned with saying how many miles of road they repaired in a given year (which is next to nothing this year thanks to the screw up of the City Engineer) Fixing the waterlines underneath the streets so they do not have to tear up new pavement makes sense, but it takes away from the dollars to fix the streets. The Politicians (especially in an election year) would rather say they fixed 10 miles of bad roads than 3 miles of bad roads and the infrastructure beneath. |

Re: Road Capping
Thanx for all of the responses Interesting If I remember correctly I stated some time ago that getting a city engineer wouldn'd be what many thought So, now here we are Too bad for our city that our previous leaders didn't do something sooner If they did recapping would have worked |

I'm Cherub but they will be addressing roads on Monday with a vote Sept 29th. There woll also be a request to form a road and infrastructure commission to handle sewer and road problems. It's a good idea let the citizens decide where the money goes not paliticians and employees . It's OUR MONEY

Re: Road Capping
Do you really think we will have input into what the commission will decide? I think that would really depend on who is appointed to this commission. Hopefully not hand picked to be an extension of those elected; to insure our infrastucture and roads are up to par. I really cannot fathom why more attention is not given to the road problems we have here in Lincoln Park. I'm hopeful that this commission becomes reality and can make a difference. |

Look on Cicotte, between Dix and Fort. There is a baracade over a 3 foot sq hole filled in with gravel, been that way for some time. They had to bust into the new cement for some reason. It will probably never be fixed. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

Re: Road Capping
That area on Cicotte seam to always flood over during heavy rains. I would of thought they would have done all repairs necessary prior to laying the new road. And yes, it has been sitting there for quite awhile in the state its currently in. I frequently use that road. |
