I wish I had Gas
I filled the gas tank in my car the other day and almost had a stroke for the amount I had to pay. at 2.72 a gallon ( as I drove to work this morning) I wondered what will be th ebreaking point of the AMerican people. Did you know two years ago when gas first reached 2.00 a gallon that the three American owned oil companies posted earnings for that quarter in the billions ( 7 billion was the number that was reported) congress promised to take action, and like ussual they did nothing. This year our great President ( be serious ) signed an energy bill that would not ease gas prices anytime soon, but would help our children in about 5 years. I want action today not five years from now. The government has fixed prices on items before, they need to step in and force the oil companies to fix the price of regular unleaded. the price should not rise above 2.00 a gallon, this would still privide for profit by the oil companies, and still allow us middle income families to drive to work, pay taxes and attempt to fullfill the american dream ( you know life, liberty pursuit of happyness) Does anyone have any constructive ideas I am by the end of the week writting a letter to Stabinow Levin and Carolyn Cheeks-Kilpatrick our rep and senators in washington, I will be sending it by email, so please anything that would give me the correct method of having them do what we the people want would help. |

Re: I wish I had Gas
Commodity Traders are adjustind the price of a barrel to catch up with the infalation rate. It was announced this morning there is a surplus of home heating oil. Iraq has increased thei production 15% . Kuwait has increased releases by 200 barrels a day. Traders have said at $70 a barrel the market is lower then the rate of inflation. Oil companies are making a gigantic profit off of the oil they sell to China and India. In the last 7 months a commodoties trader almost doubled their earnings.

Re: I wish I had Gas
Politicians don't lower prices on gas they add tax to it. It is currently 50 cents a gallon. Senator Carl Levin investigated the oil companies for price gauging and found nothing. Bush said he wanted to cut gas tax in 2003 they accused him of buying votes. They wanted to put a cut in the energy bill ,they said it would cut money for interstate road replacement. WE need 2 new refineries and a reductions in cafe standards. The left wing liberals went bananas. When Bush suggested a refinery on a closed military base . They went nuts again. When it was suggested they release Govt oil reserves . Greenspan reminded them Clinton did that to get re-elected and it had no long term effect on prices. |

Re: I wish I had Gas
The politicians are so busy squabbeling over votes that they deadlock themselves and become unable to act. How many times did the energy bill have to be brought to the House, for instance? Neither party seemed to give any real thought to the American citizens...but only to how it would make them look. Some things (within our control) can be done to help ease gas prices...but politicians fight eachother on it. Opening the Arctic Refuge for drilling, for instance. Republicans want to do it, Democrats don't. Most of the price, however, is out of our control. It is in the hands of the oil producing nations that comprise the OPEC cartel. Part of the recent energy bill that Bush signed covers research and development of alternative fuels...so that we can ween ourselves off the teet of OPEC. If enough nations follow suit, OPEC will be forced to increase production (thus lowering prices)...bringing oil to a more realistic trading range. Hopefully if and when this occurs, nobody will abandon their R&D of alterntative fuels. This is nothing new. The oil industry is entirely cyclical. We are feeling the crunch just like Americans in every decade before us felt it. When you factor inflation, gas prices in the 1970's and 1980's weren't much better than they are now.

I'm with you MUMZZEE. The only other time I felt like this was when I rushed my daughter to the hospital with chest and stomach pain. We thought she was having a heart attack. She had gas . I almost had a heart attack when the insurance wouldn't pay because gas is not an emergency. the bill was $38,500. For a 35 minute visit |

Re: I wish I had Gas
being i have been employed in the petroleum buisness for the past 25 yrs, i can tell you there most likely wont be any big reduction in the cost of gas, in the near future, and 3.00 a gal. is prob. going to be the norm. i see this as good and bad, good in that maybe it will force people out of their cars and into walking and riding bikes, since i have no great love for the automobile, the less of them the better. bad in i am getting close to retirement, and i dont want to see the industry lose anything that might affect my retirement income. |

Re: I wish I had Gas
Barrel of oil has dropped from 66.75 to 63.60. we should see prices lowered. Unleaded is now $1.89 . average should be 2.49 at the pump. |
