Should we really "Get Out The Vote"?
You do realize, that your single vote is approximately 0.017% of the total if 6,000 people vote and it is approximately 0.009% of the total if 11,000 people vote. That's almost double. In other words, your vote is more powerful with fewer people voting. Considering the lack of education of the majority of voters concerning things political, is it really better to have more people voting? Do we not all agree that most voters vote based overwhelmingly, if not totally, upon name recognition? Maybe you think it is better to have more people voting even if they are completely, or mostly, ignorant of things political? What say you? |

Re: Should we really "Get Out The Vote"?
My goal is education. My philosophy is quality over quantity....but that hopefully, it is quantity of quality. In order to make an informed voter, a voter needs information, and a reason to care.

Re: Should we really "Get Out The Vote"?
Using RubberArm's logic, we should strive to get a few voters to the polls as possible. Perhaps 6,000 is a fair representation of the city and perhaps it is not. All I know is 6,000 voters (in a hotly contested year) making the decision for the 29,000 registered voters is very sad.

You know I have often thought that myself. When I would see the election turn-out was low I would just think, "well my vote counted more, or was at least less diluted! Its selfish, but true. |

Is it selfish to want people who are educated on the issues and candidates voting as opposed to people who only go by name recognition or have no clue whatsoever when they vote? |

RubberArm, you think those 6,000 people who voted in the last local election were educated on the issues? Meet me at Memorial Park and I will sell you the cannon. |

Re: Should we really "Get Out The Vote"?
The reasons the Unions stand at the polls and hand out cards with the names of candidates they are endorsing, is because many people do not know who to vote for. Since the day I could vote, I went to the polls knowing exactly who or what I was voting on. But this is not the case for many people. They vote for the name they seen on signs, for the candidate who gave them a pen or matches or memo pad at the poll. I do not care if it is 3,000 or 6,000 or 11,000 or 29,000. Too many people in LP and the country do not take the time to educate theirselves before voting. I respect someone who votes for a candidate I am against if they took the time to educate theirself and decided they wanted to vote for that person. But I do not have much respect for anyone who walks into a voting booth and blindly votes for the most familiar name. I have worked the polls many times handing out literature. You would be surprised how many people do not know who they are going to vote for when they arrive. If you can stop someone and talk to them about your candidate, you can often persuade them to vote for your candidate. Too many poll workers just hand the voter a card without so much as a hello. Most of that literature goes instantly in the trash. When working the polls, you must be personable. It is especially effective when the candidate works the polls. But he must walk up to the voter, introduce himself and ask for their vote. He must be willing to answer any and all questions. He even must be willing to take a little abuse. I have seen candidates hand voters a "vote for me" card and not even greet them or tell them they are the candidate. |
