Scandal at LP Ice Arena
What is this "scandal" I heard about regarding the LP Ice Arena. I was told there was some "irregularity" about the arena not accepting ice time, reportedly saying they were all booked up. Then it turns out they were not booked up, they just didn't want to mess with it. No wonder Mr Duchane wants to bring in a contractor. You can bet your house that a contractor would not be turning down money. The council debates whether or not the ice arena vending machine profits should be a percentage or a lump sum. But at the same time, someone is allegedly turning away groups wanting to buy ice time. These groups that were turned away will probably never return. No wonder this thing has never made a profit. They turn away groups who come with money in hand. Outrageous. Time to investigate. |

I heard something about this, but it happened a little while ago. I heard the person responsible was demoted. Duchane doesn't like Parks & Recs because they are not profitable. This must have really set him off. There was an article in the News Herald about a contractor taking over the Community Center. Haven't heard anything about it since. I did hear rumblings about Duchane wanting to close the swimming pool, but nothing about the community center itself. |

With all the new rinks in the area and the ones expanding it will be hard to keep the ice rink open.I know that Trenton is thriving but their hockey program always has.The Ice box in Brownstown is having trouble too. There are just too many sheets of ice in this area. I think that an indoor zero entry pool that could be used year round and more of an exercise facility and gym would benefit the city more.

Parks and Rec brings in something more important than $$$!!! It keeps kids off the streets and busy. It brings in new residents. It makes our community more desirable. Its a great service. If Duchane is so worried about making $$$ he should be trying to make the community more desirable for potential residents. An investment in the community will pay of ten fold compared to trying to make a quick greedy buck. Steph |

Colleen, thank you for your input. Proves it is even more the scandal. Ice arena's are having a tough go of it and yet the LP ice arena turns down business. My friend, when that happens it hurts YOU, the taxpayer. |

I would agree that the rinks have a hard time making money at times that is for sure. Coming from Ecorse we were devastated when our rink closed since Hockey was so big in our city. We as kids lived there in the winters and it definately gave kids something to do than mischievous things around the city. A good recreation director can definately make a difference. My father worked at the Rink in Ecorse for 26 years so I knew all the directors of that rink personally and you noticed drastically the difference in revenue and organization from Director to Director. |

The Ice rink closed right after the city went into Receivership. The cost of insurance was too high so the city shut it down and put the property up for sale so that was Schimmel's doing. Once the city started to shut down those types of facilities we noticed a lot of families started to move their kids out to city's that did provide such entertainment and athletics for their children. It was really too bad, Just as an example a lot of kids would go right after school to free skating that was offered from 3:30 to 5:30 or 6:00 until the rentals started. The ice was always booked so the city could offer free skating. Until the day prior to the rink closing the ice was booked. The rink just feel a victim of poor city management and money skimming. |

I hope the financial problems are solved in Lincoln Park . I would hate to see it happen here. we all need to watch the decisions the council makes on spending. |

Very true, when city services start to slip the families with kids usually depart to find a city that has them unless the city's property values are really low and decide to stay in that city for that reason. You can't blame people either if they move for the better of their children. Time will tell with what is going on in our city. I hope it doesn't come down to that. |

I can only hope LP is NOT a city in decline, but , it sure has a lot of competition from new communities such as Brownstown and better communities throughout Southeast Michigan |

With regards to the ice rink are citizens allowed to rent it as they do the pool?

I think this would be a fun field trip for all of Your Lincoln Park.com members. We could each chip in a few bucks and skate for an hour or so. We would be helping the city, exercising and having fun. Any takers? |

For those of you who know how to skate, it would be lovely. For those of us who grew up too poor to buy ice skates, it would not. |
